Location of Hungenberg in Bergisch Gladbach |
Hungenberg is a district in the Bensberg district of Bergisch Gladbach .
history
The early modern settlement name Hungenberg was first mentioned in 1666 in the form "ahm Hundenberg" . Until the beginning of the 19th century, the Hungenberger Gut was under the Gladbach Fronhofsgericht and belonged to the Gladbach messenger office . In 1869 the settlement of Hungenbach was "re-pastured" to Bensberg . By 1905 it developed into a larger hamlet with 17 residential buildings and 104 inhabitants.
There are several interpretations to explain the determinative word hunger or dog :
- The Old High German hunno / hunto (= captain) or the Middle High German hunne / hunde (= centenarius, from the Latin centum = 100) refer to the "centenarius" , that is, the head of a hundred (Honschaft). As a result, Hungenberg would be in the etymology of the number word hundred and refer to the Honschaft (= hundredth) Bensberg.
- Another interpretation leads the Hungenberg back to the dialect adverb "ongen" (= down), which meant that the settlement is down on the mountain.
- Finally, the old spelling dogs could refer to the common field name dog , which would mean that there is poor quality soil in the area.
