Stohler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stohler is the surname of a family from the Swiss landscape of Basel. The name is a job title. Staler originally means steel smith or worker. Staler then became Stoler (first without an h), then Stohler with an h. The first known representative is Hans Staler von Bubendorf , who is documented in 1387. The first Stohler recorded in the church registers is Penteli (Pantaleon) Stohler, 1510 in Bubendorf BL. His descendant Balthasar Stohler moved to Ziefen in 1686 and founded the tribe there. Werni (Wernhardt) Stohler, b. 1705, moved to Binningen BL and founded the Binningen tribe. This kept the citizenship of Ziefen. Jakob Stohler, b. 1864, moved to Basel and founded the Basel tribe. His son Karl Stohler, b. 1888, acquired the citizenship of Basel. As a result, the descendants also became citizens of Basel. The family also spread to Pratteln and Arboldswil , and in the 19th century to the USA .
