Stomper 98 is a German-speaking Oi! - / street punk - band from Göttingen . It is part of the gray area. With its 2018er album althergebracht them for the first time succeeded in entering the German charts.

Band history

The band was founded in Göttingen in 1998. The founding line-up included saxophonist Holgi Stomper and singer Sebi x Stomper (actually Sebastian Walkenhorst), who both still belong to the line-up today. The first release was a self-titled 7 '' on the Pirmasens label Blind Beggar Records. This was followed by the debut album Stomping Harmonists on the Oi! Label DSS Records, where the band also released two more albums, a cover plate and various split singles. In 2005 Phil Templar (Phil Regaud) joined the New York punk and Oi! Band The Templars as a permanent member.

After DSS Records broke up, the band switched to Sunny Bastards , where the compilation … 4 the Die Hards was released as well as a DVD for the band’s ten-year anniversary in 2008. In 2012 they switched to Crazy United Records and released the album there … so far! .

Another record label change took her to Contra Records , where her album Altherhaben was released on March 31, 2018 , which reached number 69 in the German album charts. The album features guitarist Lars Frederiksen , the guitarist and singer from Rancid and The Old Firm Casuals . He has been part of the band since 2017.

Gray zone debate

Since the beginning of the band's career, the group has been repeatedly referred to as a representative of the so-called “gray area”, which means that the left punk scene accuses it of not sufficiently delimiting itself from the right or of supporting right-wing structures. This came about through Sebastian Walkenhorst, who grew up in Delmenhorst and was active in the right-wing skinhead scene in Bremen at the age of 16. There he was bassist for the neo-Nazi band Boots Brothers . When he moved to Göttingen a little later, he left these roots behind.

Another reason was the close collaboration with The Templars. Although the Member Phil Templar has a black skin, he noticed at various concerts because he is the right-wing band a shirt Skrewdriver contributed and also two songs the band coverte . He also played drums for First Strike, a patriotic New York band.

On April 12th, 2008 the band Indecent Exposure played in Hildesheim. Walkenhorst and Jens Brandt from Endstufe showed pictures of the event on the Internet . Anti-fascists then tried to prevent the concert in the left-wing cultural center Conne Island , among other things, Egotronic threatened to cancel their appearance there. But on November 15, 2008 the band was allowed to perform after some discussions and distancing. As a thank you, they covered some songs by old Böhsen Onkelz that evening . On their double CD Days of Your Youth they also covered a song from their album The Nice Man with Dance on Your Grave . In June 2008 the band also appeared with the former right-wing extremist band Battle Zone, which after a falling out with Blood & Honor now tried to market itself as an apolitical band.

Stomper 98 tried to settle the allegations through the scene magazine Ox and the daily newspaper, among others . They portray themselves as an anti-racist band and a large part of the allegations as a smear campaign. They also admit to the mistakes of their past. Although they are accepted again by a large part of the left-wing scene, the conflicts keep cropping up. In October 2017, anti-fascists prevented a concert in the Herrenberg youth center .

Member projects

Sebastian Walkenhorst was the bass player for the neo-Nazi band Boots Brothers before founding Stomper 98 in 1998. He is featured as a guest on the song For My Clan by the French band Lion's Law as well as the song Here we belong by Egoi! Sten. Besides Stomper 98 he is also the head of the crossover - thrash-metal band transition .

The former guitarist Nudel is now with the Belgian RAC band Kill Baby, Kill! active.

As already mentioned, Phil Regaud is a founding member and main songwriter of The Templars and has participated in numerous other Oi! Bands from New York and the surrounding area.

Thomas Rademacher has been the guitarist of the German rock band Toxpack since 2002 .
