The Hainan Strait , also called Qiongzhou Strait ( Chinese  瓊州 海峽  /  琼州 海峡 , Pinyin Qióngzhōu Hǎixiá , English Qiongzhou Strait ) is a strait between the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong and the island province of Hainan in southern China . It connects the Gulf of Tonking in the west with the South China Sea in the east.

General

The width of the Hainan Road is about 15 to 30 kilometers, the average depth is 44 meters, the maximum depth is about 120 meters.

It has recently also been crossed by the railway ferries of the Yue Hai Railway - Guangdong-Hainan Railway from Zhanjiang to Sanya .

Project

Bridge over the Hainan Street

In 2008 plans were announced to build a 140 billion RMB (about $ 21 billion ) bridge across the strait. It should have levels for both trains and cars, and be 16 miles long. Construction was scheduled to start in 2012, but the bridge was not completed until 2018. As an alternative, a tunnel is being considered. Current ferry traffic across the strait is prone to closure in fog and heavy typhoon activity.
