Straßen aus Zucker (SaZ) is a free, anti-national youth newspaper that has been published by various Berlin groups and individuals from the left-wing political spectrum since 2009 with a circulation of up to 180,000 copies. It is sent and displayed throughout the entire German-speaking area. It was named after a line of text from a song by the band Frittenbude .

history

The first edition was published in 2009 on the occasion of the "super anniversary year" around the celebrations for 60 years of the Federal Republic and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. She mainly devoted herself to topics such as school criticism, wage labor and anti-nationalism.

Since then, the newspaper has appeared around twice a year with a different focus. In 2013 there was also a special edition on the main topic of racism with texts on the subject of “20 years of Rostock-Lichtenhagen ” and an interview with an activist from the refugee camp on Oranienplatz.

In 2012 the first edition of the English offshoot "Routes Sucrées" appeared, and in 2014 the second English-language edition followed. In the same year, “Calles de Azúcar” was published in Spanish, which contains translations of previously published German articles as well as new Spanish articles. Individual articles have also been translated into Czech and Esperanto.

In 2015, a brochure on the protection of the constitution was published under the title “Secret Service Give Cell Phone” .

Content

The streets of sugar sees itself as a left-wing radical and anti-national youth newspaper. The issues deal with various left-wing issues such as feminism, anti-capitalism, racism, but also criticism of real socialism, and try to convey these in a generally understandable manner.

In addition, the issues contain interviews with various left-wing artists such as Tocotronic , Sookee , KIZ , Kate Nash or Rage Against the Machine and actors such as Robert Stadlober . Further interviews are published online under the Sweet Talking section, for example with Neonschwarz or Farin Urlaub . There is also a music channel with podcasts by DJs, as well as barrier-free versions of spoken texts read by Dirk von Lowtzow, among others .

In addition, the newspaper regularly advertises on its Facebook page for events and demonstrations from the environment of the left-wing scene and the Antifa and organizes open meetings and workshops throughout Germany. With this mixture of leftist theoretical work, anti-fascist actions and pop-cultural aspirations, the newspaper is aimed specifically at young people and schoolchildren.

All issues and articles of the newspaper are archived freely accessible on the website.

Circulation and distribution

According to its own information, the SaZ appears approximately every six months with a circulation of up to 180,000 copies. The editions have a length of 24 - 32 pages and are sent and distributed throughout the German-speaking area. The newspaper is more widely used as a regular supplement to taz and Jungle World .

Controversy

Interviews

An interview between the SaZ and Robert Stadlober in 2011 sparked the first major debate . After he had previously expressed incomprehension about the excitement that is brought about in public debates about the lighting of cars by left-wing autonomists, by saying literally: "If there are no asylum seekers' homes on fire in Hoyerswerda, I have no problems with burning merces," he added in an interview with the streets made of sugar: “Well, that things are so dirty for us is obviously due to capitalism. Unfortunately, the revolution is not just around the corner either. "

The band Feine Sahne Fischfilet replied to the question in another issue whether they were proud of Germany with: “Proud of Germany? Proud of a nation? Proud of some crappy construct? We'll throw up soon! Statements that relate positively to a nation are always negative! This all-too-popular 'we-feeling' also always needs an enemy image! Nationalism and racism go together, like Scooter and HP Baxxter. We are proud of the things we fight for ourselves! We are proud of our friends and comrades who, despite repression, fight daily for their utopias and do not allow themselves to be beaten down! In this sense! Germany? Never again!"

For this reason, among other things, the band was mentioned on "almost two pages" in the 2011 report on the protection of the constitution of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania because of its "explicitly anti-state stance".

Cake tossing on Sahra Wagenknecht

The newspaper received nationwide attention in connection with the throwing of a cake at Sahra Wagenknecht on May 28, 2016 at the party congress of the party Die Linke in Magdeburg. In a letter of confession from the “anti-fascist initiative 'Cakes for Enemies'”, Wagenknecht was accused of how the AfD “translated the 'popular anger' into political demands”. The starting point was Wagenknecht's statements on capacity limits and limits of receptivity in the population in relation to refugee policy. Wagenknecht said in an interview: “Anyone who abuses hospitality has forfeited hospitality.” First, on Sunday, May 29, 2016, Bild reported in advance that the cake thrower had accredited himself as a media representative through the SaZ for the party congress and had been granted access.

Although the newspaper announced one day after the cake was thrown that it had no connection with the cake thrower, the incident sparked a major debate about the relationship between the SaZ and the Left Party and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLS). In the FAZ , the thesis was put forward that the RLS was jointly responsible for throwing the cake with its support for the SaZ: "The Linkenstiftung made the project involved in the attack possible with its support in its current form." Other media such as Der Spiegel or Neues Deutschland discussed the incident for a few more weeks, individual politicians of the Left Party called for the RLS to distance itself. The throwing of the cake was also discussed extensively within the scene on the left.
