The Oranjestad tram ( Dutch Tram van Oranjestad , English Oranjestad Streetcar ) is a single-track tram route in Oranjestad , the capital of Aruba ( Kingdom of the Netherlands ). It is operated by Arubus , the national transport company.

history

The route was first used on December 22, 2012, seven days after the first double-decker car had been delivered. On February 19, 2013, Arubus officially opened the railway. The Aruba tram, officially called "Arutram", runs every eight and a half minutes between the cruise terminal on the outskirts of Oranjestad and the city center. The three open cars that use hydrogen as an energy source are operated according to the hydrail principle. The energy required is generated from solar and wind power. The tram does not need overhead lines. The historic looking vehicles were built by TIG / m LLC based in Chatsworth , USA. The grooved rails laid in the asphalt were manufactured by the Duisburg company TSTG.

route

The train connects the port with the city center (Schelp Straat, Havenstraat and Caya Betico Croes, the pedestrian zone and the main street to Plaza Nicky). Reversing loops are used at the terminals. Nine stops are served at a distance of an average of 200 meters.

The depot is located between the Port of Call and Rancho stops. There is a parallel route between Rancho and Plaza Chipi Chipi due to the local one-way traffic regulations: The cars drive east via Schelp Straat and west via Havenstraat.
