The Olomouc tram is a rail-based public transport system in the city of Olomouc ( Czech: Olomouc ) in the Czech Republic . In 2006 the company Dopravní podnik města Olomouce , as (DPMO, Olomouc Transport Company ) operated six tram lines . The route network is now 15 km long. On September 1, 2007, line 5 between Pavlovičky and Neředín was set. The first section of a new line was opened on November 29, 2013.

history

At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century

The main reason for the introduction of tram traffic at the end of the 19th century was the fact that the main train station was very far away from the city center and the horse-drawn buses that had been in operation since 1845 could no longer cope with the increasing volume of traffic. After the building decision had been made - it was decided to use an electric tram with standard gauge - construction work began in 1897. As early as April 1, 1899, traffic could be started on two sections with nine motor vehicles and four sidecars. The lines Dělostřelecká kasárna - Horní náměstí - Nádraží and Horní náměstí - Nová ulice were single track with passing points . The first turning loop in the Czech Republic was built at the main train station. The operator was initially Siemens & Halske .

First half of the 20th century

In 1904 the city terminated the operating contract and took over the tram operation under its own management. It soon became apparent that the trams were too heavy and therefore bridges had to be rebuilt for greater load-bearing capacity.

With the beginning of the First World War , all work on the expansion of the route network was stopped. The only exception was the route to the new cemetery in Neředín . It could still be put into operation on September 3, 1914.

In 1923 the individual lines were given numbers instead of the previous color tables. In the 1930s, the route to Neředín was extended to the military airfield - it was the first and only tram connection to an airfield.

In 1940 the most important section of the entire network, namely the connection between the train station and Žižkovo náměstí, was expanded to two tracks. Towards the end of the Second World War , the bridge between the train station and the city center was destroyed. Tram operations then ceased until 1948 when a temporary wooden bridge could be used.

Second half of the 20th century

In the years 1947 to 1958, on the one hand, further sections of the route were double-tracked and, on the other hand, the connection to the military airfield was discontinued in 1953 - which made it necessary to build a loop at the new Neředín terminus.

In the 1960s, one-way vehicles were purchased, which required the construction of reversing loops at all terminal stops. Instead, a triangle was created at one point.

To compensate for the shortage of cars, older trams were taken over from Prague several times between 1947 and 1967 . In 1957, the first ten PCC cars in the form of the Tatra T1 cars were used. In the first half of the 1960s, the Tatra T2 tram followed . The second half of this decade saw a significant renewal of the vehicle fleet, when the Tatra T3 cars came into operation.

In the 1990s, new low-floor vehicles Škoda 03T came . The connection to the train station also improved when the second track on the train station - city center line went into operation in 1997.

In 1998, the city's magistrate confirmed in a new urban development plan that tram traffic should continue to form the backbone of the city's public transport in the future.

21st century

In 2006 more low-floor vehicles were purchased - three Inekon 01 Trio sets and two Vario LF trams - another Vario LF vehicle followed in 2007 and a Vario LFR.E vehicle in 2008, which is to be followed by two more.

In June 2012, construction began on a long-planned new tram line, which will branch off the existing inner city ring after the Tržnice stop at the new Šantovka shopping center and will lead to the Nové Sady residential area. Line 6 is to go here later. The first 1.4-kilometer section of the new line with three stops (Šantovka, V Kotlině and Trnkova) ends butt at the Trnkova stop on Rooseveltova Street. This first phase of construction went into operation on November 29, 2013. The entire project should be completed by 2021.

Depot

In addition to the main building of the operating company DPMO, the tram depot is also located in Koželužská ulice.

Since it is very tight there and it is correspondingly difficult to park the trams, the tram depot is nicknamed "Rubik (s Würfel)".

Operating company

The company Dopravní podnik města Olomouce, as (DPMO) is a joint stock company that was created on March 29, 1994 through the privatization of a previously state-owned company. The city of Olomouc is the sole shareholder. In addition to the tram, the company also operates urban bus services. More than 70 buses operate on 24 bus routes and travel a network of around 290 km in length, which also includes several surrounding communities.
