Stratonike I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stratonike I (* 317 BC ; † after 268 BC) was the only daughter of King Demetrios I Poliorketes from his first marriage to Phila , the daughter of the imperial administrator Antipater . Demetrios was the ruler of the Diadochian Empire of Macedonia .

Stratonike was founded in 300 BC. Was married to Seleukos I and became queen of the Seleucid Empire . Seleucus left in 293 BC BC Stratonike to wife his son Antiochus , because according to the later ancient tradition he became melancholy and sick through his love for her (his stepmother, who was seven years his junior ) . When the doctor examined Antiochus with Appian and Plutarch Erasistratos , Stratonike, the king's young wife, entered the room and Erasistratos then recognized from the physical symptoms of his patient that the cause of the illness was not physical suffering, but love for the unreachable stepmother was. Therefore, his father left him his young wife and the kingdom.

Numerous painters have taken up the motif of the lovesick Antiochus, including Antonio Bellucci , Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres , Gerard de Lairesse , Johann Baptist Anwander and Johann Heinrich Schönfeld .

The city of Stratonikeia , located in Caria , Asia Minor , was named after Stratonike . Her son Antiochus II ruled in 261 BC. BC to 246 BC As successor of his father Antiochus I.
