Ernst Badian

Ernst Badian (born August 8, 1925 in Vienna , † February 1, 2011 in Boston ) was an Austrian-American ancient historian .

Ernst Badian's family emigrated from Austria to New Zealand in 1938. He studied in Christchurch and Oxford , England with Ronald Syme . From 1954 to 1964 was a lecturer at the University of Durham . In Oxford he received his doctorate in 1956 ( D. phil. ), In Wellington in 1962 a second time (Litt. D.). He then held various professorships in England and the USA. Badian taught from 1965 to 1969 as a professor of ancient history at the University of Leeds . From 1969 to 1971 he was Professor of History and Classical Antiquity at the University at Buffalo . From 1971 until his retirement in 1998 he taught as a professor at Harvard , and since 1982 as John Moors Cabot Professor of History . Badian is the founder and was editor of the American Journal of Ancient History through 2001 . He was a fellow of the British Academy (since 1965), a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1974) and a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences . In 1999 he received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art .

Badian has dealt intensively with Alexander the Great , judging the Macedonians extremely negatively, not least because of the impact of the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This interpretation is very influential to the present day, but it is also controversial.
