The Crookedstar Moose ( Aulacomnium ) are a genus of mosses (Bryophyta). The genus comprises six species worldwide, of which 3 species occur in Europe .
description
It is acrocarpic moss. The leaves are lanceolate to tongue-shaped. The leaf margin, which is often curved back, is usually irregularly serrated at the tip or in the upper half. The leaf vein extends into the leaf tip. The cells of the leaf blade are rounded and have a long, light papilla in the middle .
Characteristic of the species of the genus is the vegetative reproduction by brood bodies, which are in the form of small spheres at the tip of long, terminal pseudopods , i.e. stalk-like outgrowths of the gametophyte . These consist of reduced leaflets that can fall off and grow out.
The elliptical to pear-shaped, but symmetrical capsules stand on a long seta and are striped to furrowed. Your peristome consists of two rows of peristome teeth.
Distribution and types
The genus consists of six species that occur mainly in the temperate and cool areas of the northern hemisphere . Three of them ( A. androgynum , A. palustre and A. turgidum ) occur in Europe.
- Aulacomnium acuminatum
- Aulacomnium androgynum (male striped star moss )
- Aulacomnium heterostichum , a mainly East Asian species that rarely breeds.
- Aulacomnium palustre (swamp striped star moss )
- Aulacomnium turgidum
The genus was the only member of the family for a long time, but based on molecular genetic studies, two other genera are included in the Aulacomniaceae.
