The Stremme is a tributary of the lower Havel with a length of about 20 km.
River course
The river has its source in Saxony-Anhalt in the Jerichower Land district between the communities of Brettin and Roßdorf near Genthin . It flows into the Havel in the state of Brandenburg near Milow , Havelland district . Shortly before it joins the Havel, the Stremme widens like a lake.
There are several weirs in the course of the river , such as in Roßdorf, Zabakuck , Neuenklitsche and Neudessau, to compensate for height and to regulate the water level .
history
By the middle of the 18th century , the Stremme began to flow near Seedorf (Jerichow) in the immediate vicinity of the Elbe . But the first section of the Stremme - from Seedorf to Roßdorf - became part of the Plauer Canal , which was built in 1743 and is now part of the Elbe-Havel Canal . The Stremme had many curves in this section and spread out like a lake in parts.
The remaining part of the Stremme was regulated in the years from 1780 to 1784 and thus received its present appearance. The regulation ordered by Frederick the Great served, on the one hand, to straighten , widen and deepen the river and, on the other hand, to ameliorate the catchment area of the Stremme . In the course of the work, several square kilometers of marshland were drained and made usable for agriculture. The work was headed by Christian Karl Wilhelm von Katte , who later became the first district administrator of the Jerichow II district .
In commemoration of this, around 1800 he had an obelisk erected on the left bank of the Stremme near Neuenklitsche, which had now disappeared and bore the following inscription:
“In 1780 Frederick the Second, King of Prussia, had this river widened and the quarries cleared.
Chr. Karl Wilhelm von Katte. "
