The terms string (English cord) or thong (English belt ) denote a form of underpants , which is characterized by a tight cut and a cord or belt sitting in the buttocks gap . They can be worn by both men and women . This term is also used synonymously for thong , as the high-end buttock favors the transition to a narrow hip part. Illustrated by the existence of z. B. corset strings , string bodysuits and string panties are strings not necessarily thongs.

Etymology and Linguistics

String means "cord" in English , Tanga (a bikini bottom with a tied up side from Brazil ) is derived from Kimbundu ntanga or from Portuguese Tupi tanga , both of which mean " loincloth ". The origin of the term G-string is unclear, but it appeared in the English language as early as the early 19th century. The linguistic derivation of the G-string of a musical instrument is popular, but unproven.

In the English-speaking world, the term thong , i.e. belt, is more common. Colloquially, the string is also called fio dental , "dental floss", in Brazilian . The US version is butt floss , "butt floss".

One of the most detailed descriptions in English-language literature reads as follows: "Small changes in the cut have given these skimpy panties different titles - from the thong, with a 1 inch wide strip of fabric down the back, to the G-string, which, as the Spanish equivalent suggests (hilo dental), fits more like a piece of cloth between the teeth. " Accordingly, the designation belt or thong would apply to most items of clothing of this type in German-speaking countries.

Historical development

Loin aprons designed as a string or genital ornaments are among the oldest pieces of clothing known to man. Even before the departure from Africa several tens of thousands of years ago, similar items of clothing are documented, such as. For example, the Khoisan in southern Africa have been worn mainly by men for thousands of years.

In Japan , until about the defeat in World War II, the fundoshi (褌) was the traditional underwear and swimwear for men. After 1945 the fundoshi became increasingly unpopular.

In the western world, the string did not become popular until the late 20th century. From the 1970s, he emerged as a result of the increasing loosening of sexual mores and the associated fashionable changes and (as a logical evolution of the bikini fashion topless , high-cut, so-called French leg cut) isolated as swimwear and as sexy underwear on, the Journal Star reported him as part of the so-called sex wave around 1972 and 1974. However, the mainstream fashion remained largely unaffected by this.

In the 1990s, thongs became popular as women's underwear, initially promoted by the advantage that, in contrast to conventional panties, no visible slipline forms under tight, thin or light-colored legwear . Along with this fashion, the string became more widespread in swimwear and ultimately, to a very limited extent, in men's fashion too.

Styles

Although some terms are used pars pro toto and sometimes inconsistently, there are separate styles that can be given one name but not another. String , for example, actually only makes a statement about the crotch area, e.g. B. also in string body or string hipster , and thus to cover the buttocks, while thong only refers to the side parts. Letter prefixes are derived either from the thickness of the connecting parts ( G ) or from the shape of the butt joint ( T, V, Δ ) or the entire item of clothing ( C ). T-front strings also have the narrow cord in the front.

Optical effect

While the inconspicuousness of G-string underwear was initially considered an advantage, it was subsequently used actively as a visual stimulus in women's fashion by pulling the string higher than the waistband of the leg dress in connection with hip pants and skirts, which resulted in the Rump is optically emphasized: the so-called whale tail has a similar optical effect as the " ass antlers " tattoo .

Men's thong

Men's thong

There are also strings for men, but these are not as common as strings for women.

Children's string

There are also thongs for children, mostly girls. The beginnings go back to Brazil in the 1990s. The range now includes thongs for children from around 2 years of age. This development is viewed critically primarily by women's and child protection associations. They fear that the children will be at risk.
