Strome Castle

Strome Castle is the ruin of a low castle on the banks of Loch Carron in Stromemore , 5.5 km southwest of the village of Lochcarron on a headland between Loch Carron and Loch Kishorn in the Scottish administrative division of Highland .

history

The Macdonalds , Earls of Ross , had the castle built. In 1472, Strome Castle belonged to the MacDonald of Lochalsh clan , and Alan MacDonald Dubh , the 12th chief of the Camerons , was constable for the MacDonalds of Lochalsh.

In 1539 King James V loaned the castle to the MacDonald of Glengarry clan , and Hector Munro, 1st of Erribol of the Munro clan, was constable of the castle.

In 1602 the castle was besieged by the troops of Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Lord Mackenzie of Kintail , clan chief of the MacKenzies , with the help of their allies of the Matheson clan . After the MacDonalds surrendered, Strome Castle was destroyed and blown up. The MacDonalds of Glengarry had a new castle built called Invergarry Castle .

In 1939 the ruins of Strome Castle were given to the National Trust . Today the castle ruins consist of the courtyard and the remains of a tower with a square floor plan. It is considered a Scheduled Monument .
