Setup date 1989

The Struffelt is a nature reserve consisting of heather and moorland above Rott , a district of Roetgen in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia . The Struffelt is part of the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park .

It is named after the Struffeltkopf ( 450  m above sea  level ) with very nutrient-poor clay soils. Because it towers over the surroundings by around 100 m, the clouds coming from the west rain down here. An average annual precipitation of around 1100 mm is measured.

Already on the maps of Tranchot and von Müffling (1803 to 1804) the Struffelt is registered as a heather area. Due to the lack of nutrients and the high level of precipitation, reforestation efforts remained in vain, despite the drainage ditches that can still be seen in the area today.

In 1989, investigations were carried out for the dedication of the 56 hectare heathland as a nature reserve. 175 different plant species, 54 bird, 156 butterfly and 108 beetle species were counted here. As part of the project, the remaining trenches were also filled and blocked.

The establishment as NSG was carried out in accordance with paragraph 20 a), b) and c) Landscape Act (LG). The aim is the preservation of the habitat for several plant and animal species endangered according to the Red List in NRW, as well as the preservation and optimization of the area as a biotope complex with endangered and rare biotope types in NRW. The following biotope types protected according to Paragraph 30 BNatSchG or Paragraph 62 LG occur in the area:

  • Moors,
  • Swamp and quarry forest,
  • Swamps,
  • Dwarf shrub heather,
  • natural and near-natural standing waters.

The only tree species that can survive here in isolation is the birch , a pioneer plant . Typical vegetation is heather , blueberry and pipe grass , rarely bogberry and seven star .

The Eifelsteig hiking route runs right through the Struffelt .

The remains of a group of bunkers from the Second World War can be found in the nature reserve.
