Building

The Struppsche Villa was built in 1909 according to the plans of the architect Karl Behlert in the style of neoclassicism . Before that, the Koenitz Palace, built in 1823, was located in the same place. The villas with ionic pilasters provided central projection with the two-wing main entrance on the ground floor. Above this there is a wide balcony, which is supported by two Ionic columns and two Ionic pilasters. At the front of the barrier corps, rounded bay windows and balconies are attached to the upper floors. The mansard roof of the three-storey is provided with dormer windows. Inside, a wide, spiral staircase made of marble leads to the first floor. The numerous halls and rooms are half-high with dark wood paneling .

history

In 1823 the Saxon-Meiningische Minister Könitzsch had a classical palace built in place of today's Strupp villa . The Jewish banker Mayer Strupp bought it in 1862 and used it as a residential and commercial building. His private bank, Bankhaus BM Strupp , was located on the ground floor . His son Gustav Strupp, who was among other things financial advisor to Duke Georg II , had the palace demolished in 1909 and the Strupp villa built in the neoclassical style. He used it as a residence and company headquarters. Gustav Strupp's heirs were forced to sell the villa in 1939. In GDR times, the building served as the county cultural center " Artur Becker " for the county Meiningen . In addition to the artistic circles and other similar institutions housed here, numerous events of various kinds took place here. From the 1970s a popular nightclub was established in the villa .

After the political change, the villa became a community center owned by the district of Meiningen and the first renovation work began. In April 1995 the property was transferred back to the Strupp community of heirs . In January 2015, the BM Strupp Foundation established this and brought the property into the foundation. In 2016, the foundation signed a leasehold contract with the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen. After the renovation started in 2018, the Meiningen music school "Max Reger" and parts of the adult education center are to move into the Struppsche Villa in autumn 2020.
