The Münster student orchestra was founded in 1976 by students from the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . Today it consists of about 70 members, made up of students from the university, the Musikhochschule Münster and professionals, and is a member orchestra of Jeunesses Musicales Germany .
The orchestra
Soon after it was founded, the student orchestra was able to establish itself as an integral part of the cultural life of the Westphalian Wilhelms University and the city of Münster ; the biannual concerts have long become a tradition. They each show the program developed during the semester, which includes solo concerts and symphonic works as well as contemporary compositions and contributions from other artistic fields such as film , dance or pantomime . In addition to the semester-end concerts, the student orchestra regularly takes part in oratorio concerts.
The orchestra has been sponsored by the Rolf Dierichs Foundation for several years.
Youth work
Since 1988 the concerts for children have developed into a further focus of the orchestra's work, and since then they have also taken place regularly once a semester. As part of these children's concerts, two children's concert tours were undertaken through South Tyrol , which the orchestra undertook in 1999 and 2000 with its former conductor Joachim Harder and the music teacher Hermann Große-Jäger .
Concert tours
Concert tours with a symphonic program have also taken the student orchestra to the south of Spain several times in recent years, to Japan for its 20th anniversary in 1996 and to Venezuela in 2001 for its 25th anniversary with its then conductor Dirk Kaftan . There it made music together with the National Venezuelan Children's Orchestra, which has almost 250 members, and played concerts a. a. in Caracas , Mérida and Puerto La Cruz .
After a trip to Saragossa (Spain) in 2005, where the SOM performed parts of its award-winning Schumann program and pieces from the previous semester program, another trip to Spain followed in 2006, this time to Murcia .
In September / October 2007 the orchestra went to Lombardy in northern Italy and played concerts in Arona , Sondalo and the newly opened Chiostro di S. Antonio in Morbegno at the time of the trip .
In April 2015 the Münster Student Orchestra took part in the 2nd European Student Orchestra Festival in Leuven, Belgium.
Important concerts and productions
CD productions
In 1997 the student orchestra recorded a CD with works by Alban Berg , Leonard Bernstein and Alexander Glasunow . A second CD was recorded in 2003 under the direction of Dirk Kaftan with works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold , Rolf Liebermann and the 5th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven . The latest production from 2013 includes a recording of the 5th Symphony by Peter Tschaikowsky conducted by Cornelius During.
Cooperations and special concerts
- 2001, concert for children at the request of the WDR at the Westphalian Music Festival in Iserlohn with Dirk Kaftan as conductor and the cabaret artist Herbert Feuerstein as speaker in Peter and the Wolf
- 2002, participation in the Schubertiade of the Münster Municipal Theaters
- 2003, collaboration with Theater Bielefeld and the youth dance theater of the Bielefeld Theater: Francis Poulencs The story of Babar, the little elephant
- 2007, the orchestra plays under Ulrich core as part of a benefit concert for Unicef, the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg .

With 24.6 out of 25 possible points, the student orchestra took first place - Final decision at federal level in Gera (1996)

The student orchestra received first prize in the nationwide competition for its program "Schumann, Scenes a Marriage".
