Etudes Sans Frontières - Studying Without Borders Germany e. V. is the name of the German-speaking section of the French organization Études Sans Frontières, founded in Tübingen and Konstanz in 2006. The aim of the non-profit association is to support selected students from war and crisis regions so that they are qualified to implement their own development project in their home country. Studying Without Borders supports motivated students who are convinced that well-educated young people can play a key role in rebuilding their homeland. Another task of the association is to inform the public about the situation of the people in the target regions. In addition, the work of Studying Without Borders is a work by students for students who strive for cultural exchange across borders. As a platform for civil society engagement, the members should gather valuable experience for their future and develop and develop their own potential.

Principles

With the intention of promoting respectful exchange and solidarity support across national and cultural borders and to make a contribution to independent, peaceful and sustainable development in states and regions that are badly affected by war or its consequences, the association supports young people in need and students from these affected regions to give them access to higher education. The aim is also to help raise public awareness of the difficulties in the states and regions concerned. Regarding both the internal structure of the association and its activities, any negative discrimination based on origin, skin color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age or subject must be ruled out. The association itself is not committed to any religious or ideological beliefs.

History of the club

On October 29, 2006, students from Konstanz and Tübingen founded the association on the initiative of political science student Felix Weth. The association is an offshoot of the French organization Etudes Sans Frontières, which has made it possible for Chechen students to study in France since 2003, with 21 Chechen students now supported. At the beginning, the focus was on recruiting members and setting up the working groups, but soon afterwards the actual work of the association began.

The Chechnya project is based on the experience of Etudes Sans Frontières in France. The preparations took one and a half years to enable Chechen students in Tübingen and Constance to complete their studies. The first Chechen scholarship holder arrived in Constance in April 2008, and since then four Chechen scholarship holders have received funding.

The Congo project has been supporting Congolese scholarship holders at the University of Kindu in the east of the DR Congo since September 2007 . 25 scholarship holders are currently being funded. Since 2010 Studying Without Borders has also been active in Mweso , Congo . 64 scholarship holders are currently being funded.

A new project is currently being set up in Afghanistan with the University of Herat. Initially, a pilot project with 2 scholarship holders is planned, which started in March 2013. If the pilot project is successful, the scholarship program will be expanded further.

In addition to these projects, the association achieved a rapid increase in members, mostly students from various disciplines, and is now active in more than a dozen university locations in Germany.

Awards

Studying Without Borders is the official 2009/2010 project of the United Nations World Decade of Education for Sustainable Development . In addition, Studying Without Borders is one of the winning projects of the “Be a Futurist” campaign run by the drugstore company DM in cooperation with the German Commission for UNESCO and is part of the 2010 traveling exhibition “Studying at War. When the future has to wait. ”A place in the land of ideas . The student initiative was also recognized in July 2010 as part of the 1Goal benefit competition, which is supported by Hillary Clinton and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon as well as various international football players and stars. On October 25, 2010, Studieren ohne Grenzen received the German Student Union's “Students for Students” award for social commitment 2009/2010 in Berlin, and in May 2011 the project in the Congolese city of Mweso was awarded the CharityStar . Selected from 80 projects, Studying Without Borders is one of the three winners, who are advised and financially supported in 2013 by PEP, a program by Ashoka Germany . In addition, Studying Without Borders was awarded the 2013 Engagement Prize.

Patrons

The patrons of the student aid organization include the Federal Minister of Justice a. D. Herta Däubler-Gmelin and the Minister of State in the Foreign Office a. D. Gernot Erler as well as the former President of the Czech Republic Václav Havel and Member of the European Parliament Daniel Cohn-Bendit .

Target regions

The main selection criteria for the scholarship holders in all projects are their need and social commitment. The need is specifically defined for each target region. The social projects that the scholarship holders work on in their home regions can be very different.

Afghanistan

The project is aimed primarily at people in need whose studies are to be promoted or made possible by the project.

Burundi

In Burundi, needy school leavers are given individual financial support to implement their own social projects in addition to their university studies. Similar to other target regions, it is a monthly grant.

Guatemala

Similar to other target regions, the funding is aimed at students in need. A prerequisite for the scholarship is that the social project to which the scholarship holders undertake benefits the indigenous population and is geared towards them.

Sri Lanka

The students receive funding based on the example of other target regions. There is also a cooperation with the Action Forum.

Chechnya

The association awards scholarships to young, motivated students from Chechnya and enables them to acquire a university degree in Germany. Necessary conditions for funding are neediness and very good academic achievements. When selecting the scholarship holders, the planned project to rebuild one's own home plays a decisive role. Important criteria for this are the usefulness of the project for Chechnya, its feasibility and the actual necessity of studying outside Chechnya in order to implement the project .

In addition to the scholarship program, this project aims to equip the university library in Grozny with German and English-language literature.

DR Congo

In contrast to the Chechnya project, Studying Without Borders supports students directly in the DR Congo . Selected candidates from the northern Congolese city of Mweso ( North Kivu ) are awarded scholarships that cover their tuition fees and their expenses for study materials as well as a subsidy for their living expenses. Here, too, the necessary conditions for funding are neediness, special talent and a specific and convincing development project of your own.
