North Kivu (German also Nordkivu ) is a province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with around 6.6 million inhabitants (as of 2015). Their capital is Goma .
geography
The province is located in the east of the country and borders in the south on the province of Sud-Kivu , in the south-west on Maniema , in the north-west on Tshopo , in the north on Ituri and in the east with the common Virunga volcanoes on the neighboring countries Rwanda and Uganda . In this mountain area there are national parks - in the Congo the Virunga National Park .
history
The province was created in 1988 when the former Kivu Province was divided . From 2006 to 2009 the third Congo war between the rebel groups under Laurent Nkunda and the government troops was fought in North Kivu .
There is flight and displacement in the province. In June 2009, 300,000 people were on the run. Aid organizations such as Oxfam criticized the low international awareness of the conflict.
From 2018 to 2020, an Ebola epidemic raged in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . As of June 11, 2019, there were over 1,800 documented illnesses and 1,287 deaths in the wake of this epidemic in North Kivu.
From 2007 to 2019 Julien Paluku Kahongya was the governor of the province, after the election on May 30, 2019 and the acting government of Feller Lutayichirwa, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita took over the business on June 28 .
