The Studio Theater ( Polish Teatr Studio im. Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza , short: Teatr Studio ; 1980–1985: Centrum Sztuki Studio Teatr - Galeria , 1985–2008: Centrum Sztuki Studio im. Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza ) is a city theater in the right wing of the Palace of Culture at Plac Defilad 1 in Warsaw .

history

In 1971, Józef Szajna took over the management of the Classical Theater ( Teatr Klasyczny ) and in 1972 converted it into the Studio Theater. As an author's theater, it set itself apart from the Dramatic Theater ( Teatr Dramatyczny ) opposite, under the direction of Gustaw Holoubek , which relied on a literary repertoire. The author's plays Repliki (1972 and 1973), Witkacy (1972), Gulgutiera (1973), Dante (1974), Cervantes (1976), Mayakowski (1978) were performed under Szajna's direction . In addition, the plays Dobrodziej złodziei by Karol Irzykowski (1975) and Śmierć na gruszy by Witold Wandurski (1978) were staged. Under Szajna's direction, the theater had the reputation of being one of the most avant-garde theaters in Poland. In 1972, in addition to the theater, a contemporary art gallery and a school of scenography for students of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts were founded. In 1980 the theater became a studio - art center theater - gallery ( Centrum Sztuki Studio Teatr - Galeria ) in order to underline the connection between the theater and the art gallery.

In December 1981, after falling out with the ensemble, Szajna submitted his resignation, which coincided with the declaration of martial law in Poland . In 1982, the deputy director of the Warsaw City Department of Culture, Waldemar Dąbrowski, was appointed theater director. Szajna recommended the director and scenographer Jerzy Grzegorzewski as artistic director . In the same year an event agency was established under the direction of Władysław Serwatowski . In 1984 the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra founded by Franciszek Wybrańczyk and Yehudi Menuhin was given its seat and rehearsal hall in the theater.

On February 24, 1985, the 100th birthday of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz , the theater was opened in his honor in Centrum Sztuki Studio im. Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza . The most important productions under the direction of Grzegorzewski include Parawany by Jean Genet (1982), Pułapka by Tadeusz Różewicz (1984), Dziady - improwizacje after Adam Mickiewicz (1987) and Śmierć Iwana Iljicza after Lev Nikolajewitsch Tolstoi (1991) as well as the authors' plays ciemnienie malowideł (1985), Tak zwana ludzkość w ołędzie (1987), Usta milczą, dusza śpiewa (1988), Miasto liczy psie nosy (1991), Cztery komedie równoległe (1994) and La Bohème (1995). In addition, Grzegorzewski worked for several years with Tadeusz Łomnicki , which culminated in the 1985 performance of the play Ostania taśma . In 1990 Grzegorzewski took over the management of the theater after Dąbrowski left.

In 1997 Grzegorzewski took over the management of the rebuilt National Theater and took part of the ensemble with him. He entrusted the artistic direction to Zbigniew Broza and the direction to the former deputy director Krzysztof Kosmala . Under Brzoza, the profile of the theater changed: instead of authors' plays, the focus was on contemporary dramaturgy, e.g. E.g. the pieces Nareszcie koniec (1998), Miłość na Madagascarze (2000) and Pasja (2007) by Peter Turrini , Mała Steinberg by Lee Hall (2001) and Więź by Rony Munro (2004). The poetic chamber plays by Irena Jun (2004, 2005) took a firm place in the repertoire . Readings by the actresses Edyta Jungowska (2000), Monika Świtaj (2001) and Ewa Błaszczyk (2006) have also been included in the program.

In 2007, Bartosz Zaczykiewicz was appointed artistic director and director after the theater fell in popularity. Zaczykiewicz had previously successfully led the Jan Kochanowski Theater in Opole . He continued the collaboration he had begun in Opole with Marek Fiedor and directed only one play in 2008. After the Sinfonia Varsovia, which should now have its own premises, had terminated the contract with the art center and the event agency had also been dissolved, the theater was renamed studio theater on January 1, 2008. As the theater fell into a deeper crisis, Zaczykiewicz resigned in mid-2009.

In 2010 Grzegorz Bral took over the artistic direction and Maciej Klimczak took over the direction. Bral reopened the theater to experimental performances with his performances Ćwiczenia z Ionesco (2011), Idiota based on Fjodor Dostojewski (2011) and Sierpień by Tracy Letts (2012).

In 2011 Roman Osadnik was given the management, who quickly expanded the repertoire and managed to increase the number of visitors.

In 2012 Agnieszka Glińska took over the artistic direction and expanded the ensemble. In addition, the main stage was named after Józef Szajna and the art gallery after Jerzy Grzegorzewski. Glińska and Osadnik managed to bring the theater to new popularity. Due to conflicts with the theater management, Glińska resigned in December 2015.

In April 2016 Natalia Korczakowska took over the artistic direction of the theater.

The studio theater has two stages. The large stage ( Duża Scena ) offers up to 299 seats. The smaller stage ( Scena Malarnia ), which was formerly a painting workshop, offers space for 120 spectators.
