backgrounds

Around 4350 BC Domesticated horse has long been an important workhorse for mankind. In the course of the 20th century, the workhorse transformed into a sport and leisure horse in the industrialized nations. A study by the market research institute Ipsos, which was carried out on behalf of the FN in 2001 and 2002, shows the great economic importance of the horse sector in Germany. Over 8.74 million people are interested in horses. 1.24 million people ride regularly. In addition, the horse sector offers a wide range of job opportunities, in which around 300,000 people currently work. The horse is directly or indirectly the main object of business in 10,000 companies, craft businesses and service companies. The horse sector has an annual turnover of 5 billion euros. There is no comparable study for Europe in this area, but the rest of Europe and the world also offer a diverse job market for everything to do with horses. This results in a need for courses in this subject area.

Basic content of the course

Basically, all courses in equine management at the various locations have an agricultural-specific basis, whereas courses in equine science are mostly based on a veterinary background. This results from the close connection between the agricultural and veterinary medicine and horse sectors. In order to prepare the graduates well for the diverse job market, the course content is broadly based. All locations have a practical relevance and require internships and project work. In addition to horse-specific subjects such as feeding, breeding, husbandry and training, veterinary medicine is one of the basics that are taught. In addition, the students gain knowledge from both business and economic fields.

Locations in Germany

Since then there has been an additional opportunity to study agriculture and then specialize in the horse sector. Since 2006 it has been possible to study equine economics / equine science at various locations in Germany.
