The Sturgeon-Weir River is a river in east-central Saskatchewan , Canada. It has its origins in Corneille Lake .

It flows about 130 km in a southerly and later south-southeast direction. He flows through the Amisk Lake . Finally it flows into Namew Lake at Sturgeon Landing . This is drained to Cumberland Lake , which in turn is partially traversed by the Saskatchewan River . The course of the river lay on the main Voyageur route from eastern Canada to the northeast into the catchment area of the Mackenzie River . Its steep incline (about 4 feet per mile ) led the voyageurs to name the river Rivière Maligne or Bad River . Alexander MacKenzie compared the Sturgeon-weir River to a continuous rapids. For today's canoeists , the river gradient is an almost perfect body of water for paddling down the river.

Voyageur route

The Voyageur Route branches off from the Saskatchewan River about 125 miles west of Lake Winnipeg . A very short canal leads to Cumberland Lake. The then important Cumberland House depot is located on the south bank . Upstream, the route leads through Namew Lake to Amisk Lake, which can now be reached by road from Flin Flon . Further upstream the Sturgeon-weir River, today's Saskatchewan Highway 106 is crossed. About the Corneille Lake and the north because subsequent Mirond Lake was Pelican Narrows and Pelican Lake reached. Further north-west is the 400- yard Frog Portage , which leads to Trade Lake and the Churchill River to the north . The route has at least 250 more miles from here: in a westerly direction the Churchill River upstream to Methye Portage , which then led into the catchment area of the Mackenzie River.
