Widest strait between the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea: The Suðuroyarfjørður

The Suðuroyarfjørður is a natural strait in the Faroe Islands between the islands of Suðuroy in the southwest and Lítla Dímun , Stóra Dímun and Skúvoy in the northeast.

The Suðuroyarfjørður takes its name from the island Suðuroy and means "South Island Fjord". This and other straits of the Faroe Islands are the only ones between the North Atlantic in the west and the European Arctic Ocean in the east, with the Suðuroyarfjørður being the widest.

There are two villages on Suðuroyarfjørður: Sandvík and Hvalba (both on Suðuroy, the South Island ).

history

The Faroese According swam Sigmundur Brestisson in late autumn 1005 the Suðuroyarfjørður to escape from Skúvoy to Suðuroy. During the 15 kilometer distance, his (not further defined, but older) relative Einar Suðringur and his cousin Tóri Beinirsson both died exhausted on his shoulders.

traffic

Currently, this waterway is cut several times a day by the car ferry Smyril , which passes Lítla Dímun to the east and connects Suðuroy with the capital Tórshavn . In addition, Atlantic Airways flies regularly over the Suðuroyarfjørður with its line helicopter to connect Stóra Dímun with Suðuroy.

The plan to build a tunnel under the Suðuroyarfjørður at some point and thus connect the South Island with Sandoy in the north is currently still a utopian dream. First of all, it is checked whether the Sandoy tunnel under the Skopunarfjørður from Gamlarætt on Streymoy to Sandoy is worthwhile.

Dialect border

The Suðuroyarfjørður forms an isogloss of the Faroese language and divides the Südfjord dialects (south of the Skopunarfjørður ) into two further main groups:

  1. The dialects of Sandoy, Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun in the north
  2. The Suðuroy dialect in the south.

The most characteristic feature is the elimination of the Faroese tightening south of the Suðuroyarfjørðurs: a Jógvan is not pronounced ˈjɛgvan , as everywhere else, but ˈjɔgvan . There are also words and forms on Suðuroy that only appear there.
