Sub Piatră ( Hungarian Búvópatak ) is a village in Alba County in Romania . It is part of the Sălciua municipality .
Geographical location
Sub Piatră is located in western Transylvania , on the north-western edge of the Trascău Mountains . The place is located in two southern side valleys of the Arieș River , on the western slope of the limestone karst plateau Bedeleu ( Sub Piatră = literally "under the rock"), about two kilometers southeast of the community center.
history
Sub Piatră is a scattered settlement that has probably existed for several centuries, but was first mentioned as such in 1874.
population
The 180 inhabitants of the place (as of 2002) call themselves all Romanians . The number of inhabitants has decreased significantly since the first official survey in 1956 (399 at the time).
traffic
Sub Piatră is located away from major traffic routes. The national road ( drum național ) DN 75 from Turda ( Thorenburg ) to Ștei is about three kilometers north of the town in Sălciua de Jos . A narrow, paved road leads there.
Since the shutdown of the small railway leading from Turda to Abrud through the Arieş Valley in 1999, the nearest train station is about 30 km away on the Alba Iulia – Târgu Mureş line in Aiud .
Attractions
On the edge of the village there is a wooden church built in 1797, which belongs to a Romanian Orthodox nunnery. The function of this listed church has since been taken over by a stone building.
Not far from the monastery is the karst cave Peştera Huda lui Papară , from which an underground brook emerges.
A natural rock gate , Poarta Zmeilor (literally "dragon gate ") can be reached via a steep ascent . Immediately next to it is a cave named after this gate, Peştera Poarta Zmeilor .
There are still several thatched-roof houses in the vicinity of the village, but these are no longer used for residential purposes.
