Subotiw ( Ukrainian Суботів , Russian Суботов Subotow , Polish Subotiw ) is a village in the southeast of Cherkassy Oblast in Ukraine with about 700 inhabitants (2007). It is considered the birthplace of the Ukrainian ataman and national hero Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj .
The village, first mentioned in writing in 1616, is the only place in the district council of the same name in the south of Tschyhyryn Rajon . In the village there is a museum and a church built in the Ukrainian Baroque .
Geographical location
Subotiv is located on the right bank of the Tyasmyn , a tributary of the Dnieper , 15 km northwest of the district center of Tschyhyryn and 58 km southeast of the district center of Cherkasy . The regional road P − 10 runs through the village .
Personalities
Subotiv is the birthplace of the Cossack hetman, born in 1595, and founder of the first Cossack state Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj and his eldest son Tymofij Kmelnyzkyj (* 1632).
