Sudden Strike 4 is a real-time strategy game for multiple operating systems and game consoles that focuses on the land war in World War II . The real-time tactical game is the fifth game in the Sudden Strike series and the fourth stand-alone version. The war simulation is the first computer game developed by the Hungarian development studio Kite Games , a company founded in May 2014 by game developers with experience in the industry. The English title Sudden Strike [ ˈsʌdən straɪk ] means immediate military strike .

publication

The release for Windows and PlayStation 4 was originally scheduled for June 27, 2017, but was postponed to August 11, 2017 for Windows and August 15 for PlayStation 4. On August 11, 2017, the Linux version was also released on the Steam distribution platform . The port for the Xbox One was released on May 25, 2018.

Game mechanics

Sudden Strike 4 simulates the characteristics of motorized infantry and armored vehicles in a battlefield environment . The single player mode offers three campaigns with seven missions each on the part of the Wehrmacht , United States Army , British Army and the Red Army . Each of the missions in the different campaigns is based on real battles and skirmishes in World War II. In the German campaign, for example, the player leads the Wehrmacht in the western campaign , Operation Barbarossa , Battle of Stalingrad , Operation Citadel and during the Battle of the Bulge . The attack on Poland serves as a tutorial and is the prelude to the German campaign.

The game mechanics are heavily based on those of their predecessors, with an emphasis on lots of micromanagement and the unique traits and abilities of limited units, rather than resource gathering and basic building. The player takes over the control of mechanized infantry units on companies down to below battalion level , he can select, group, position and command units . The opposing armed forces must be cleared up and brought into effective firing range , for which at least one faction must move towards the other. Artillery can also bombard areas outside the field of vision.

Reinforcements continue to play a role, but are triggered or scripted. Each faction offers three different commanders with different doctrines and skill trees. Among the commanders are famous WWII generals such as George S. Patton , Heinz Guderian , Bernard Montgomery and Georgi Konstantinowitsch Zhukow . Close air support or ship artillery can be requested selectively. The more than 100 simulated combat vehicles include Allied, German and Soviet main battle tanks , tank destroyers , self-propelled guns , tank artillery , wheeled armored vehicles and anti-aircraft tanks .

The surroundings are partially destructible, bridges and houses can be blown up, ice surfaces can be burst, trees can be knocked down. Deep mud, snow or water slow down the marching speed.

technology

The graphics are displayed in three dimensions by the Unity3D engine in an overview perspective . The map display can be zoomed in three stages and tilted slightly, but not rotated. Sudden Strike uses a physics engine where houses and buildings obscure units from view and fire while clusters of trees provide cover . The game speed is real-time , but can be paused to issue further commands to units.

Extensions

The game has been expanded by four campaigns in the form of downloadable content :

Surname Missions Commanders New units
Road to Dunkirk 4th 2 10 new units plus additional buildings and ships
Finland - Winter Storm 6th 3 19 new vehicles, along with additional buildings and infantry units.
Africa - Desert War 6th 5 30 new vehicles
The Pacific War 10 6th 50 new units including various aircraft carriers

“Sudden Strike 4 modernizes the old feel of the game: tactics are the trump card, every unit counts. Strong campaigns, thin multiplayer content. "

- Martin Deppe : GameStar

“Sudden Strike 4 has become a solid RTS that seems to shine with tactical depth for a while. It looks great and there is a great atmosphere in the battles. But that wears off faster than I would like. After a short time nothing surprises me anymore. Instead, I play the stupidity of the AI against them. "

- Benjamin Danneberg : PC Games

“The developers are not reinventing the tank chain, but the mixture of many large battles and a few smaller missions is varied and exciting. [...] What bothered us most was the micromanagement, which is pretty much in the foreground in some missions. Taking care of fuel and other equipment is neatly solved in terms of operation, but a bit monotonous in the long run. After all, thanks to the pause function via the space bar, the whole thing doesn't degenerate into a hectic rush. If you like the scenario of Sudden Strike 4, don't mind the heavily scripted missions and maybe even interested in the mod community, you will get very solid strategy fun here. "
