Sudeten German Council

The Sudeten German Council (SR) is a non-partisan association of Sudeten Germans . In particular, it pursues the goal of promoting German - Czech understanding and offering Sudeten German politicians from different parties a common forum for discussion in order to inform them about the concerns of the Sudeten Germans and to reconcile the political aspirations of the Sudeten Germans with the views of the political parties represented in the Bundestag coordinate.

The SR consists of 30 members, half of whom elect the Federal Assembly of the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft , the other half designate the parties represented in the Bundestag. The SR publishes documentation and statements that are also circulated in political circles in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Scandinavia. It is based in Munich and has its office in the Sudeten German House .

Currently, the general assembly includes the spokesman for the Sudeten German ethnic group Bernd Posselt, MEP a. D., also the members of the Bundestag Dr. Silke Launert, Stephan Mayer, Florian Oßner, Iris Ripsam (retired), Eckhard Pols, Dr. Wolfgang Stefinger, Karl-Heinz Brunner and Rita Hagl-Kehl.

Since February 1, 2014, the general secretary has been Christa Naaß (SPD) as the successor to Albrecht Schläger (also SPD), who had held the office since May 2006. His predecessor was the CSU politician Matthias Sehling . The Presidium of the Council currently includes Stephan Mayer, Member of the Bundestag, Steffen Hörtler, Bernd Posselt, MEP a. D. and Albrecht Schläger, MdL a. D. at.

activities

The association holds talks with politicians, invites to discussion events, organizes exhibitions, creates documentations and publishes books and other publications on the concerns of the Sudeten Germans, also in English and French.

Marienbad talks

The association holds an annual spring meeting with German and Czech representatives from public life, in particular scientists, journalists, members of parliament and government representatives.

The exhibition "The Sudeten Germans - An Ethnic Group in Europe"

On May 9, 2007, Alois Glück , the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, opened a new SR exhibition entitled “The Sudeten Germans - an ethnic group in Europe” (author Konrad Badenheuer ). The work has meanwhile been shown in several Bavarian cities and is currently being redesigned.

Publication activity

In addition to political work, further activities include documentation and publication in particular. The so-called Sudeten German White Book (documents on the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans) was published in 1950 by the Sudeten German Council or its predecessor organization.

Visit by Federal President Roman Herzog in 1997

In October 1997, then Federal President Roman Herzog gave the keynote address at the association's 50th anniversary in the Sudeten German House in Munich. He praised his communication work and urged the Sudeten Germans and Czechs to make further efforts towards reconciliation.

History, former representatives

CSU politician Walter Becher (1912–2005) was the long-standing Secretary General from 1950 to 1980 . From 1982 to 1987 Jörg Kudlich (1936–2009), from 1987 to 1992 Oskar Böse (1924–2016) was Secretary General of the Sudeten German Council. Böse had been a member of the committee since 1955, Kudlich since 1963. Other general secretaries were Heinz Kraus and Matthias Sehling.
