Suga Free (* 17th January 1970 in Los Angeles , California as Dejuan Walker ) is an American rapper of styles of West Coast hip hop , gangsta rap and G-funk . His stage name is sometimes spelled together as Sugafree .

biography

Suga Free began his music career in 1997 with his debut album Street Gospel , which was largely produced by DJ Quik . Despite the single If U Stay Ready , which stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks and reached the top position 79, the long player had no resounding success. Only in the sales rankings of the Heatseekers (in which only unsuccessful musicians are listed so far in the charts) and the R&B albums (which are limited to the genres R&B and hip-hop) the work was able to place.

As a result, he limited himself to guest appearances on songs by other artists. Among other things, he could be heard on several albums by DJ Quiks and on both CDs by Eastsidaz as well as on Restless by Xzibit and Tha Last Meal by Snoop Dogg .

It wasn't until 2003 that Suga Free released again under its own name. First he recorded “Pomona Pimpin!” With Doc Holiday and Clue Dog, before he had his second solo album “The New Testament: The Truth” followed in 2004, which was sold together with a short DVD . It became his biggest commercial success, debuting at number 72 on the Billboard 200 , but disappearing from there after three weeks.

In the same year, the posthumous collaboration with Mausberg followed , which appeared under the group name “The Konnectid Project” as “Konnectid, Vol. 1”. In 2006, the album Suga Free's Secret Congregation was released together with Beta Bossalini and Magnificent , before Suga Free's third work Just Add Water. was put on the market. He was able to place himself on the Billboard 200 again, but only for one week at position 194.

In addition, the two compilations The Features and The Features, Vol. 2 , each appeared as a double album this year . The compilations focus particularly on songs by other musicians on which Suga Free was heard as a feature , or on pieces by Suga Frees on which he collaborated with well-known artists.

From 2007 to 2009 Suga Free recorded new albums every year, which, like at the beginning of his career, could only be found in the division charts. Afterwards he switched to guest appearances again, with the exception of the compilation Why U Still B * llsh * tt! N? The Best of Sugafree , which was released in 2011.

In 2014 the single Grooveline, Pt. 2 released in collaboration with Schoolboy Q , which would herald Suga Free's next album "The Resurrection", which was scheduled for 2015. However, it did not appear.

style

The music of Suga Frees largely corresponds to the classic G-Funk , but is a little less influenced by synthesizers than usual and often incorporates more natural sounds. In addition, references to rock music can be heard more often .

Thematically, Suga Free presents itself in a humorous way as a clichéd pimp . This is especially true for the album Just Add Water. which is supposed to be a guide to being a pimp.

His rap style is also unusual. He uses a slightly falsetto- like voice and raps very quickly, constantly changing meter and using a lot of syncopation .
