Sujatha Ramdorai (* 1962 ) is an Indian mathematician who studies algebraic number theory.

She is often quoted as R. Sujatha.

Life

Sujatha Ramdorai studied at St. Joseph's College in Bangalore with a bachelor's degree in 1982 and at Annamalai University with a master's degree in 1985. She received her master's degree via distance learning, as she was already married and had a daughter. She then went to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai , where she did her doctorate in 1992 with Raman Parimala ( Witt Groups of Real Surfaces and Real Geometry ). In 1991/92 she was at the University of Regensburg and in 1993/94 Assistant Professor at Ohio State University . She is a professor at the Tata Institute and is currently also a professor at the University of British Columbia .

She initially researched the algebraic theory of quadratic forms and algebraic geometry, but is best known for her contributions to the non-commutative Iwasawa theory , collaborating with John Coates . She also deals with the theory of motives.

In 1997/98 she received a Humboldt Research Award . In 2003 she was a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn and in 2007/08 she was a visiting scholar at the Chennai Mathematics Institute and from 2008 to 2011 she was visiting professor there.

She became a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2004, the National Academy of Sciences of India in 2005 and the Indian National Science Academy in 2009. In 2006 she received the ICTP Ramanujan Prize and in 2004 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (SSB).

From 2009 she was on the scientific advisory body of the Indian Prime Minister. From 2007 to 2009 she was a member of the National Knowledge Commission of India. She was an invited speaker in the Mathematics Education and Popularization panel at the ICM 2018. In 2020, Ramdorai received the Krieger Nelson Prize .

She is editor of the International Journal of Number Theory and the Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society .
