William A. Stein (born February 21, 1974 in Santa Barbara , California ) is an American mathematician who studies modular forms and number theory.

William A. Stein

Stein studied computer science at Northern Arizona University and then mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley , u. a. with Robin Hartshorne , Robert F. Coleman, and Kenneth Ribet . In 2000 he received his doctorate with Hendrik Lenstra in Berkeley (Explicit approaches to abelian modular varieties). From 2001 to 2005 he was Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor at Harvard University , was Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego from 2005/2006 and was then Associate Professor at the University of Washington .

He deals with modular Abelian varieties in particular from an algorithmic perspective and is the founder of the Sage project for open source mathematics software. One area of interest is generalizations of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture on modular Abelian varieties.

In his spare time he skateboarders .
