Sumeet Samos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sumeet Samos (probably born in 1994), also known as Sumit Samos , is a rapper and human rights activist from the Indian state of Odisha , who uses his titles to fight the suppression of Dalits . He raps in the languages English and Hindi and publishes his pieces mainly on Youtube .

Life

Sumeet was raised in a small village, Tentulipadar, in the Koraput district . In an interview he reports that this village was very traditional and that caste differences were part of everyday life. In the boarding school he later attended, he also experienced implicit forms of discrimination , such as the fact that students from higher castes were not used to clean the toilets or do other work. After finishing school he moved to Delhi , where he worked in a restaurant. It was there that he first heard of Jawaharlal Nehru University , where he soon studied Latin American literature . Sumeet hoped that his visit to the university in New Delhi, which is considered to be politically left - wing, would finally allow him to experience a non-discriminatory environment. According to his statements, however, this hope was not fulfilled. For example, he experienced a lack of support from professors, which he attributes to his origins. During his studies, Sumeet joined the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Student Association , an organization that campaigns for Dalit rights in the university context . In his field of study, Sumeet felt connected to many of the subjects dealt with in the literature, especially through the ongoing resistance to oppression. He only came into contact with hip-hop when he was over 20 years old. He names Joyner Lucas , Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino as role models in terms of style and the presentation of his own ideas . The main inspiration for his own works, however, is his anger.

reception

The Indian hip-hop and rap scene has so far been dominated by members of the upper class who sing about money and objectify women in their texts. The classic form of rap as the voice of the oppressed has so far been little represented in India. Sumit's texts, on the other hand, are written very clearly for those who experience discrimination and oppression even in India's caste system and do not gloss over the situation in any way. Against this background, Sumit's songs are considered revolutionary and his art as groundbreaking and an important influence on a generation of young Dalit. He was invited to Paris in 2018 as the artistic representative of this group for a concert with discussion organized by the Radio Live show.
