Sunetra Gupta

Sunetra Gupta (born March 15, 1965 in Calcutta , West Bengal , India ) is a professor of epidemiology and a writer .

Life

Gupta moved with the family as a child through various countries in Africa and Europe before returning to Calcutta. Her father was a friend of the poetry and songs of Rabindranath Tagore . He often interpreted them in the family circle and Sunetra was artistically influenced by this poetry. She translated some of Tagore's songs and poems from Bengali into English .

Gupta studied biology and graduated from Princeton University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts. She received her PhD from the University of London in 1992 . She is now (2012) Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at the Faculty of Zoology at Oxford University and is a member of the Advisory Board of Princeton University Press for Europe.

Gupta's particular scientific interest is the transmission of diseases to humans in malaria , AIDS , influenza, and bacterial meningitis .
