The Sunrise Dam gold mine is located 770 kilometers northeast of Perth , 220 kilometers northeast of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and 55 kilometers south of Laverton in Western Australia in the eastern gold fields of Western Australia on the east side of Lake Carey .

The gold mine is 100 percent owned by Anglogold Ashanti .

history

The gold deposit was discovered in August 1988. In 1993 the deposit was estimated at 2.3 million tons of rock with a grade of 4.6 grams per ton and the open pit mining began in 1995, which in 2008 reached a depth of 440 meters. In 1999, AngloGold took over the mine from Acacia Resources Ltd , and in 2003 underground mining began.

The power plant of the mine was with diesel generators operated and 2008 LNG - gas turbines replaced, in order to minimize costs and to minimize the emission of pollutants.

geology

Gold mines nearby

The area has the typical profile of the flat landscape of the Yilarn Craton . On Lake Carey are sandy and gypsum dunes, shallow salt pans and shallow eroded deposits. At the Sunrise Hills a ferrous banded rock comes to the surface.

The gold bearing ore deposit is located in the Norseman-Wiluna green belt . In the vicinity of this gold deposit there are other gold deposits that are being mined. The banded ferrous rock of the Sunrise Dam gold mine, which has deposits of 2 to 10 meters in thickness , contains meta- sedimentary , meta volcanic and metaclastic rocks and magnetite-containing tuffs . Quartz and feldspathic porphyries intruded into these rocks . In the quartz-containing veins that formed in the course of the sunrise shearing ring , there is gold that was also deposited close to the surface through weathering .

Mine operation and the environment

The rock is extracted using traditional technology. The extracted rock is moved with wheel loaders and dump trucks and transported to conveyor belts . The separation of rock and gold is done by gravity and the carbon-in-leach process. The preparation of the rock is carried out in this method, after comminution of the rock, flotation and Cyanidauslaugung involving activated carbon . After filtration and precipitation, brown sludge is produced, from which raw gold is extracted after washing and drying by reduction . Despite the reuse of the cyanide-containing washing solution, cyanide can also escape into the environment. Although these are easily decomposed and broken down in nature, the resulting large spoil heaps and cyanide dusts can be distributed in an uncontrolled manner by wind and water, toxins can enter the environment in an uncontrolled manner and cause serious ecological damage.
