The Super League is the first handball league in Serbia. The league is run by the Handball Federation of Serbia and was founded in 2006 after the state of Serbia and Montenegro collapsed and the then Super League was dissolved.

The first round of the competition is played by all teams, with the exception of the two participants in the SEHA league . A total of 12 clubs play for a place in the championship round in 22 rounds. The four best teams from the first round as well as the two participants in the SEHA league qualify for the championship round. The six teams then play for the championship title on ten match days.
The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round are relegated to the second-class handball league of Serbia.

History 1953-2006
The first championship of Yugoslavia in a "small handball" (at that time big handball was still played) was held in 1953 as a tournament in Virovitica. The first master was Prvomajska Zagreb. From the 1957/58 season to 1991 the first Bundesliga was formed, which was played in the double league system (with two games each, home and away). The record champions were the Croatian team Partizan Bjelovar, now RK Bjelovar . The record cup winner is the Bosnian team Borac Banja Luka. The cup was held from 1955 to 1992.

1992-2006
The first league of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in handball was the highest handball league in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It was founded in 1992 after the break-up of the SFR of Yugoslavia and the dissolution of the former First League of Yugoslavia. In 2003 it was renamed the First League of Serbia and Montenegro. In 2006 it was dissolved after the collapse of the common state of Serbia and Montenegro. Partizan Belgrade was the most successful team with six championship titles and four cup wins.
