Superficial Animal is the debut album of Tom Beck . It was released on March 25, 2011 on Comude (Tonpool).
History of origin
Tom Beck was already active as a musician at the beginning of his acting career. He studied musical at the theater academy and auditioned for a musical film, which was never shot. He then worked as an actor, he became known as one of the leading roles in Alarm for Cobra 11 . However, his music career was little known. Only in the film From the Depth of Space (2003) did he sing and play three songs. In 2011 he had the chance to record an album. According to his own statement, the songs went in the direction of “[l] life-affirming, positive pig rock with all influences from country , funk and singer and songwriter .” Except for one, he composed all the songs on his own. He cites bands like Kings of Leon , Bon Jovi , the Rolling Stones and Damien Rice as inspiration . The first sketches for the album were made in May 2009, but the songs were not completely written in the studio until October 2009. After a pre-production and the revision of the songs, the album was finished in late 2010.
After the album was released, Tom Beck went on tour. He played at the two festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park .

Texts
The lyrics of the album are of a personal nature and are based on experiences of the last 10 to 15 years. However, they are not autobiographical, but topics that Tom Beck occupied and that he tried to "pack into a fictional story". Sexy is about "that there can be many people in the world who think you are great, but in the end it all depends on the one who makes you feel that you are really something - that is, 'sexy'."
reception
The album was rated rather average by Kai Butterweck ( laut.de ). The lack of authenticity was criticized: “ With his debut, the good guy is at least as far removed from the authenticity of the rock heroes mentioned as Semir Gerkhan and Ben Jäger from Starsky & Hutch . “In addition, the style of music is not really what Beck announced in his interviews. The whole thing has little to do with pork rock , rather it is a " radio-rock mix that is easy on the ear, but at least as quickly finds its way out again ". Volker W. Stephan from Der Westen agrees with this tenor and adds that “ this album would not have come about without Cobra 11. At least not to the great media hype surrounding the musician Tom Beck. And almost as a matter of course, a not entirely unknown car maker Tom Beck jumps aside as the promoter of the disc. "
success
Even before the album was released, his first single , Sexy , was released on March 11, 2011 , which entered the singles charts at number 50 two weeks later. On March 25, 2011 his first album Superficial Animal was released , which rose to number 36 in the German album charts. Drive my Car , the second single, was released on June 3, 2011.
