Super Nature ( English for "About Nature") is the third album of the British Synthpopduos Goldfrapp . It was released in the UK and Europe on August 22, 2005.

Supernature was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Electronic / Dance Album category. Commercially the album was a huge success. It went platinum in the UK in January 2006 and sold one million copies worldwide by spring 2007.

production

Like its predecessor Black Cherry, Goldfrapp's third album contains several pop songs with strong electronic influences, but focuses on catchy melodies instead of the song's refrains. Singer Alison Goldfrapp described the songwriting process as a "crusade between Berlin, New York and northeast Somerset " and said she was inspired by artists like Donna Summer and New Order .

Goldfrapp and Will Gregory had recorded the album under the title Ooh La La towards the end of 2004. The recordings were in Bath, Somerset , exactly where they recorded Black Cherry . For this they rented a small house, where they spent several months writing the songs. They stated that the sparsely populated area kept distractions out and the footage was very focused. In an interview they also said that the duo always followed a certain pattern when writing songs.

The name of the album Supernature appeared to Alison in a dream and describes “ An uber world of sound and hybrid creatures. It's a place to take part in fortnightly disco séances, where people dance with spirits and howl like beasts of the forest wearing lycra and stilettos. "

The duo admitted to the College Music Journal that they had never intended to create disco music. But due to the great success of the songs on their predecessor Black Cherry , which were also popular in nightclubs, they wanted to bring a dance-oriented album onto the market. In contrast to the previous albums, Goldfrapp used the guitar as a musical instrument on Supernature .

Songs

Alison Goldfrapp in the Supernature era.

The album's opener and first single is Ooh La La , a synth pop song that features the electric guitar as the duo's first song. The duo justified their decision to take Ooh La La as the lead single of the album with the argument that the song reflected the glamorous mood of Supernature and Black Cherry . In Great Britain the single was very successful and made it into the top 5 of the singles charts.

Ride A White Horse ( German: "A White Horse ride" ), the third single from the album, was inspired by the disco era is about a woman who pampered by her lover and wants to be treated well. He should read her every wish from her lips. Among other things, she would like to ride a white horse.

The ballads Let It Take You ( German: “ Let It Take You With You” ) and You Never Know ( German: “Man Weiß Ja Nie” ) have minimal instrumentation and focus heavily on Alison Goldfrapp's vocals. The atmospheric Time Out From The World has been compared by reviewers to the compositions on Felt Mountain .

Slide in ( German: "pushing" ), an electroclash -Song about sex, and Koko were with the early Gary Numan compared. Satin Chic , a disco song with glam rock and cabaret influences, is about a glamorous person who doesn't know how to behave. Goldfrapp and Gregory named Satin Chic their favorite song on Supernature .

The final track of album Number 1 is about the importance of relationships, although they are not always meant to be forever.

Supernature received an extremely positive response from the critics. Alexander Cordas from Laut.de gave the album 5 out of 5 possible points:

With album number three, the trademarks of the Goldfrapp-Gregory duo shift a little further in the direction of electronics ... The increased use of synthetic sounds suggests a more sterile sound cosmos. But this is not the case. Well, keyboard surfaces, distorted guitars and distorted sound gimmicks could easily be part of any EBM album. Goldfrapp would not be the same, however, if they did not use it to trim a piece of music that clearly bears their stamp ... Take Satin Chic, for example . What the track does not already promise in the title, they bang the listener's stunned-looking grimace with merciless vehemence. A fart-dry bass drum soon joins a strange intro in the hoppelpoppel rhythm. Electro polka with honkytonk piano. It does not work? Convince yourself. In the Uptempo region this is definitely the best that has come out of the house of the British so far ... The hat from which the duo conjures up their ideas has now to encompass the dimensions of the hole in the South African Kimberley. There is definitely room for songs that will have room on future albums.

Daniel Leckert from CDStarts.de also praised the duo's third album: “The album appears superficial and maybe even interchangeable, but with every listening session you catch yourself revising your initial opinion and loving the addictive factor alongside all sorts of subtleties. You discover a magical and highly contagious euphoria that you wouldn't have suspected after hearing it for the first time. The star Goldfrapp: It still shines ... Even if it doesn't seem like it when you first listen to it, this long player, like its predecessors, needs time and a few tries. But then you will love it more and more and will not want to let go.
