population

The Surb valley is known because of the Surb valley Jews . After the Swiss Jews were expelled from the cities between 1623 and 1633, they were only allowed to settle in Lengnau and Endingen until freedom of establishment was granted in 1866. Jewish traders settled here mainly because of the trade fairs in nearby Bad Zurzach , but they had to buy protection and umbrella letters from the bailiff in Baden . Their colloquial language, Surbtaler Yiddish , survived well into the 20th century and was thus one of the last dialects of West Yiddish still spoken . It was essentially documented by Florence Guggenheim-Grünberg .
