The Surprise is a replica of the British 24-pounder frigate 6th Ranges Rose from 1757.

history

The ship was built in 1970 under the name Rose according to a blueprint designed by Phil Bolger , which was based on the original plans of the British Admiralty from the 18th century, at the shipyard " Smith and Rhuland " in Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) and by the United States Coast Guard classified . The following ten years her home port was Newport (Rhode Island) , where she served as a port attraction, among other things. In 1985, Kaye Williams bought the rose and relocated it to Bridgeport, Connecticut . There she was used as a sail training ship under the supervision of the "HMS Rose Foundation" . During this mission she was regularly referred to as HMS Rose , although, strictly speaking, she was not authorized to carry this ship's name prefix .

2001 bought 20th Century Fox the ship and sat in the movie " : Master and Commander The Far Side of the World as the commanded by the main character of" Surprise one. After the completion of the shooting, the ship was leased under its new name Surprise to the " Maritime Museum of San Diego " , which it was ultimately bought. In September 2007 a restoration was completed, which also restored the sailing properties. In 2010 the ship was again a film prop in " Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ", where it portrayed HMS Providence .

In 1991, the Connecticut General Assembly passed the ordinance known as "An Act Concerning the HMS Rose", which stipulated that the ship was put into service for the Connecticut Naval Militia and was to be maintained by it. The regulation has not yet been repealed.
