Surturs Lohe is a German pagan metal band.

history

The band was founded in 1996 by Ragnfalt and Tristan. The line-up changed over the years. Only Ragnfalt is left of the regular cast. The music of Surtur Lohes contains elements of folklore and classical music. Some of the still active band members Surturs Lohes used to be active in the even older pagan metal band Tumulus. So far, Surturs Lohe has released the demo Urda (1999) in 1999, the two albums Wo erst Elfen tanzten (2000) and Vor Walvaters Thron (2004) as well as two split EPs.

Surturs Lohe was rarely seen live, but around 2004 the live performances began to increase. Between 2004 and 2010, Surturs Lohe became the band Helritt , because Ragnfalt didn't want to play live. So he separated from the rest of the group, who then went their own musical paths with Helritt. The material for their debut album defying the decline (Det Germanske Folket / Twilight Vertrieb) came from a planned Surturs-Lohe album, which Ragnfalt released for the new band.

In 2007 Surturs Lohe was reformed again with the old line-up of Ragnfalt, Reki and Nidhöggr. In 2009 guitarist Heidenherz from Fimbulvet and a little later Wolfhetan from the band of the same name joined them as bassist as well as the singer Alraun. In 2011 the album Nornenwerk appeared on Einheit Produktionen . After the album, Ralph von Menhir and Odroerir joined the band. The album Seelenheim was released with him in 2016 .

In November 2017, singer Recki left the band after 16 years to devote himself to new projects.

style

The band is named after the fire giant Surtur , who plays a decisive role in Ragnarök . Musical influences are early folk, pagan and Viking metal bands like Bathory , In the Woods… , Storm , Isengard and Ulver , Norwegian black metal bands like Burzum , Strid , Darkthrone , old companions like Tumulus and Menhir as well as classical ones Music by Edvard Grieg , Johann Sebastian Bach , Modest Petrowitsch Mussorgski and Richard Wagner .

Irminsul and Yr-Rune are united in the band logo . Lyrically, the band is based on the pagan-Germanic subject area as well as the romanticism of nature. The current album Seelenheim also contains settings of works by Walther von der Vogelweide ( Under der linden , translated into New High German) and by Friedrich Rückert (poem Barbarossa, here titled Der Kaiser im Berg ).

In the early and mid-200s, several releases appeared on the NSBM label Christhunt Productions . The group also had a split with the NSBM band Nachtfalke and the gray zone band Odal . In the course of this, the Antifa called for boycotts during this time . According to the band, the group came to Christhunt Productions as the third band after Belmez and Bluttaufe, when the development into a right-wing extremist label was not yet foreseeable. When the hustle and bustle of the label tended more and more to the right, an attempt was made to get out of the contract at the time. Despite the waiting period of almost nine years, the comeback album Nornenwerk also had to be released on the label. With the change to unit productions these allegations disappeared. Surturs Lohe publicly distanced themselves from the NSBM scene, as well as from "religious, left-wing [and] right-wing models of worldview" and explain today:

“In recent years there have been no reports at all from this direction ( note: this refers to the Antifa ) as far as Surturs Lohe is concerned. We are very happy about that, because we really only want to make our music. I hope that by now it will be noticed by whoever that we are not putting forward any political messages. For us, music is paramount. That connects us with our listeners, regardless of religion or skin color. "
