Life
Susanna Salonen was born in Finland in 1966 and grew up in Lübeck from 1973 , where she graduated from high school in 1986.
She gained her first film experience in 1988 as a second camera assistant in the feature film Cha Cha Cha by Mika Kaurismäki . She then worked as a lighting technician and camera assistant for documentaries and feature films.
Her first directorial work, A Tokyo Fusebox , came about by chance during a trip to Japan in 1998 and tells essayistically about her experiences as a hostess in a hostess club in Tokyo's entertainment district Roppongi and about life as a foreigner in Tokyo. The film premiered in the Forum of the Berlinale in 1999 . The next film, Monsoonregen, describes a journey by public transport from Phuket via Cambodia and Vietnam to Hong Kong like a diary. Along the route, Salonen encounters very different living environments, for example former soldiers of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia or western extras at television game shows in Hong Kong. This was followed by the documentaries Shea Surfergirl , Red and Blues, and the autobiographical story The Beginning Was Good . She accompanied the ruling mayor Klaus Wowereit at the television event 24 hours Berlin . Salonen works as a director and as a camerawoman. She is a member of the German Film Academy.
She was awarded the Grimme Prize in 2016 for the feature film Patong Girl , for which she also wrote the screenplay and which is based on her time as a diving instructor in Phuket , Thailand .
