Live and act

Susanne Menzel was born on June 8, 1976 in Siegen as the daughter of the former managing director of the Sonor company in Bad Berleburg , Karl-Heinz Menzel, and Regina Menzel. Raised in Wingeshausen, she attended the Keppel High School in Hilchenbach after primary school until she graduated from high school in 1995. From 1996 to 2002, she studied biology, education and English at the universities of Münster , Dakar (Senegal) and the college of William and Mary (Virginia, USA) in higher education and master’s degree. In 2003 she worked as a research assistant in the Faculty of Education and in the Center for Environmental Research (ZUFO) at the University of Münster. From 2004 to 2007 she was a research assistant in the Department of Biology Didactics at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 2007, she wrote her multilingual dissertation Learning Prerequisites for Biodiversity Education there. Chilean and German Pupils' Cognitive Frameworks an Their Commitment to Protect Biodiversity [learning requirements for biodiversity education. Student ideas of Chilean and German students and their willingness to protect biodiversity] accepted; in the same year Menzel received his doctorate there . Her dissertation was published in 2008.

Following her graduation she was post-graduate scholarship in the DFG - Research Training Group "Matching of School Learning".

In 2008 she came to Osnabrück for a junior professorship and was appointed professor of biology didactics in Gießen and Cologne in 2011 after being rejected . From 2016 to 2019 Menzel was Vice President for Research and Promotion of Young Talent at the University of Osnabrück.

Since the previous President, Wolfgang Lücke, was not available for another term of office, the selection committee, after a nationwide call for applications and after the application process had been completed, had the previous Vice President as the only candidate for a public hearing and for election by the University's Senate. All 19 members of the Senate voted for the 42-year-old scientist, so that the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science appointed her successor to Wolfgang Lücke. Since taking office on October 1, 2019, Menzel has been the youngest president of a German university.

She is married, has two children and lives in Münster.
