particularities

Impact crater

Suvasvesi is a lake in eastern Finland near the city of Kuopio . The lake consists of two circular open bodies of water, Kuukkarinselkä in the north and Haapaselkä in the south. The two partial lakes are separated from each other by a group of islands. The Suvasvesi has 688 islands. The lake area is 234 km². It is the eighteenth largest lake in Finland. Kuukkarinselkä is the third deepest lake in Finland with a maximum water depth of 89 m.

In the northwest, the Suvasvesi is connected to the Kallavesi by a sound . The place Vehmersalmi lies on this sound . Together with the Kallavesi and other lakes, the Suvasvesi forms the Iso-Kalla lake system. In the east the Suvasvesi flows to Kermajärvi and over the Heinäveden reitti to Haukivesi .

In 2001 rubble was found on Kuukkarinselkä . Thus, the impact crater known as Suvasvesi North is the sixth recorded in Finland. Its crater diameter is about 3.5 km. The time of the impact is around 85 million years. The crater is at ( 62 ° 39 ′ 0 ″  N , 28 ° 10 ′ 0 ″  E ).

Haapaselkä is similar to its northern counterpart. It is also an impact crater. The impact crater is known as Suvasvesi South . The crater diameter is estimated at 3.8 km. Its age has been dated to at least 710 million years based on argon studies of impactites on the southern shore of the lake. The crater is at ( 62 ° 35 ′ 54 ″  N , 28 ° 12 ′ 59 ″  E ).
