The Suzuki XF 650 Freewind is a motorcycle of enduro class with single-cylinder engine , which by the company Suzuki was built from 1997 and imported between 1997 and 2003 to Germany. Almost 7000 machines have been approved in Germany to date .

concept

As a lightweight single-cylinder enduro, the XF 650 was aimed at the customers of the BMW F 650 , which had been produced with great success from 1993 onwards , and to which it was similar in terms of concept, appearance and even name. Although it - like the Aprilia Pegaso , which was also positioned - never achieved the sales figures of the Bavarian model, it was popular in many countries as a versatile and good-natured all-round motorcycle. Driving schools and motorcycle rental companies valued the manageable machine as well as novice drivers and physically weaker drivers. Even years after production was stopped, the robust machine can still be found on the streets every day.

Application area

The field of application of the enduro is large. It is suitable for short jaunts and longer trips due to the comfortable, upright seating position of the driver as well as - thanks to its handiness due to its low weight - for the city. Long suspension travel, high ground clearance, high exhaust and engine protection also allow light off-road use. However, this is limited by the road tires chosen by most drivers and the unprotected fork tubes.

particularities

The construction of the XF 650 with box swing arm , chain drive and tank arranged above the engine is conventional. Neither an anti-lock braking system nor a catalytic converter were offered. A special feature, however, is the multifunction display in the cockpit: the digital speed display, a speed display as a bar chart and the segment fuel gauge are combined in a rectangular liquid crystal display. Also unusual was the two-tone paintwork, in which the tank fairing was a different color from the other fairing parts of the machine. The combination of a red tank with silver side panels was popular.

Strengthen

The strengths of the machine include the oil-cooled single-cylinder engine, a further development of the Suzuki DR 650 unit, widely praised for its smooth running and stability . Mileage of over 180,000 kilometers without engine revision, which is unusual for single-cylinder engines, is known. The braking system is also considered to have been a success, and despite not having a second disc on the front wheel, it was at the top of its class in comparative tests.

weaknesses

One of the weaknesses of the Freewind was the too long side stand, which often led to tipping over. The headlights of the first years of construction are also considered to be a weak point, as their reflector mounts tended to pulverize due to vibrations, so that the inner workings became dusty over time. A relatively soft suspension setup was also criticized, which is why many drivers retrofit progressive fork springs and a harder shock absorber.

Several model modifications during the construction period should help. A facelift gave the Freewind a modified headlight with separate reflectors for high and low beam.

service

The service intervals are 6,000 km, except for the first small check after 1,000 kilometers. The valves should be readjusted every 12,000 kilometers. Due to the simple construction of the motorcycle, many maintenance points, such as B. the oil change can be carried out by yourself, which can put the short maintenance intervals and thus the higher maintenance costs into perspective.
