Sveinn Pálsson (born April 25, 1762 on the farm Steinsstaðir on Skagafjörður ; † April 23, 1840 ) was a doctor and naturalist from Iceland .

He is a pioneer in the study of Icelandic glaciers and volcanoes , which he systematically pursued from the 1790s. He is also considered to be the first to climb Iceland's highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur , and Eyjafjallajökull (August 17, 1793). He was also interested in the fauna and flora of his homeland, which he described. According to him, which is Mount Pálsson named in Antarctica.

Exploring the glaciers and volcanoes

During his research, he found that glaciers move in a way that is similar to that of pitch . He focused on the study of glacial sediments, melt water and floods as well as the effects of subglacial volcanism . His conclusions contained valuable clues regarding the formation and behavior of glaciers.

His fundamental work Draft of a Physical, Geographical, and Historical Description of Icelandic Ice Mountains on the Basis of a Journey to the Most Prominent of Them in 1792-1794 submitted the 1795 of the Danish Society for Natural History. However, it went unnoticed for nearly a century. It was not published in part until 1880 and was not published entirely in Icelandic until 1945, where it laid the basis for today's Icelandic glaciology and volcanology . The disinterest is explained by the isolation of Iceland in earlier times. It was off the shipping routes.

Description of Icelandic society

Sveinn Pálsson also traveled through Iceland and wrote reports for the Danish government about the conditions in the country. B. made suggestions for better use of fishing.
