Sven Afhüppe (born October 3, 1971 in Emsdetten ) is a German journalist. Since 2015 he has been editor-in-chief of the daily business and financial newspaper Handelsblatt in Düsseldorf, which is published by the Handelsblatt Media Group .

Life

Afhüppe studied economics at the University of Münster and in 1994 received a scholarship from the Institute for the Promotion of Young Journalists for an accompanying journalist training in Munich . In 1997 he completed his studies in Münster with a degree in economics. He then graduated from the Georg von Holtzbrinck School for Business Journalists , which he graduated in 1999.

Afhüppe began his journalistic work in 1999 as an editor at WirtschaftsWoche in Düsseldorf . At the beginning of 2000, he moved to Berlin as a capital correspondent for the business magazine . From 2004 he held the same position at the news magazine Der Spiegel before moving to the Berlin office of the Handelsblatt in 2006. There he was initially the economic policy correspondent before he took over as deputy head of the parliamentary editorial office in 2008. In October 2011 he moved to Düsseldorf as deputy editor-in-chief of the Handelsblatt. This was followed in January 2015 by the appointment of editor-in-chief of the business and finance newspaper, which he led jointly with Hans-Jürgen Jakobs as dual leadership. Since January 2016 he has been the sole editor-in-chief of the Handelsblatt.

During his time as editor-in-chief, the areas of print, online and digital were merged into an integrated editorial team, the Handelsblatt business club was founded and the area of ​​live journalism was established. In 2016 he organized a. a. two temporary editorial camps in London for the Brexit referendum and in Washington for the US election to report live on the events.  

In addition, the special refugee edition “Who are you?” Was developed in September 2015 under his aegis, with which the Handelsblatt gave more than 40 refugees from 15 countries in Germany a voice and which won the Theodor Wolff Prize in the “Topic of the year ”.

Also under his leadership, the Handelsblatt was named “best newspaper in Europe” at the European Newspaper Award .

In addition to his journalistic activities, he also moderates conferences and industry events, such as the German Employers' Day, banks in transition, the auto summit and the Pathfinder future congress. In addition, he is regularly represented as an economic and financial expert on television and radio. a. in the Press Club (ARD), Morgenmagazin (ZDF) and Current Hour (WDR). 

Others

Afhüppe is a member of the jury for the German Culture Promotion Prize, an award from the German Business Cultural Association. Since January 2011 he has been a member of the Atlantik-Brücke . In 2001 he graduated from the Bertelsmann Foundation's summer academy for business journalists in Cologne, San Francisco, New York and London. Sven Afhüppe is co-editor of the book “Europe can do it better” (2019).
