Sven Lange (historian)

Sven Lange (* 1967 in Bonn ) is a German officer ( colonel ) and military historian . He is currently working at the Bundeswehr Center for Military History and Social Sciences .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1987, he joined the armed forces as an officer candidate . He served in the 123rd Panzer Battalion in Kümmersbruck and from 1990 to 1994 studied for a master's degree in history (with Eckardt Opitz, among others ) and social sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . Then he was used in various functions as an officer in the troop service u. a. at the Panzer Lehrbataillon 93 in Munster. From 2000 to 2002 he completed the 43rd general staff course (H) at the command academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg. In 2001 he was awarded the PhD thesis of the flag oath. From 2002 to 2003 he was a member of the SFOR contingent. In 2003/04 he completed a Master of Arts in National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. His thesis (2004) Revolt against the West. A Comparison of the Boxer Rebellion of 1900-1901 and the Current War against Terror was overseen by Alice L. Miller and Donald Abenheim .

In 2004/05 he was employed as a department head at the German Military Representative in the Military Committee of NATO and the EU / WEU, Lieutenant General Klaus Olshausen , in Brussels. In 2006 he became Adjutant of the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr , General Wolfgang Schneiderhan , and in 2008 Special Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commanders Transformation (SACT), General James N. Mattis , in Norfolk, Virginia. From 2011 to 2013 he was a consultant in the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense (PlStab) and in the Politics department of the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg).

In 2013 he took over the management of the education department at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) in Potsdam. He is also co-editor of the magazine military history . His main research interests are the "Theory of Military History" and the "German Empire".
