Sven Meyer (basketball player)

Sven Meyer (born July 26,  1963 in Hildesheim ) is a former German basketball player . The 2.10 meter tall indoor player played 80 international A matches for Germany between 1985 and 1991.

career

In addition to basketball, Meyer also played volleyball and athletics, from 1980 the center player focused on basketball, he played for SV Hambühren and then moved to Bayer Leverkusen. In the 1983/84 season he joined the Bundesliga club MTV Giessen . In 1984 he went to the United States , studied and played first at North Idaho College, then in the 1986/87 season at the University of Oregon . In the meantime, namely in March 1986, he played briefly in Gießen again. He was used at the University of Oregon in 30 games and scored an average of 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per encounter. In the 1987 NBA draft , Meyer was in the third round in a total of 51st place of theSacramento Kings selected but never ended up playing for the club.

In the 1987/88 season he played for FC Bamberg in the basketball league , between 1988 and 1992 he was  under contract with Alba Berlin and the predecessor clubs DTV and BG Charlottenburg. From 1992 to 1994 Meyer was again active in Leverkusen and won two German championships with the Rhinelanders. Meyer later ran for TSV Quakenbrück and SSV Einheit Weißenfels in the 2nd basketball league  and ended his career there in 1998.

After the end of his playing career, Meyer worked as the owner of a clothing store, started the popular sports event “School Cup” in Berlin and worked as a player's agent.

National team

Meyer made his debut in the German national senior team in May 1985. In 1987 he was part of the German squad for the European Championship, but was not used in the course of the tournament, in the summer of 1988 he played for the national team in the Olympic elimination round in the Netherlands and scored an average of 7.5 in ten games. By 1991 he played a total of 80 international A matches for Germany. In 1989 he won bronze at the Universiade in Duisburg with the German student selection .
