The Mitteldeutsche Basketball Club (MBC) is a German basketball club from Weißenfels . Since May 2019, following the sale of the naming rights, the team has been participating in the game as Syntainics MBC (original spelling in capital letters SYNTAINICS MBC). With 24th place in the Eternal Table of the Basketball Bundesliga (as of 2017), it is the most successful basketball club in the new federal states .

history

Founded in the GDR (1952–1991)

The predecessor of the Central German Basketball Club, the SSV Einheit Weißenfels , was founded in 1952. In 1958 the basketball department was founded. The first success of the basketball players was promotion to the second-rate GDR league in 1962, from which they were relegated in 1965. After one rose again in 1972, the relay victory followed in 1979, with which the Weißenfelser obtained the right to participate in the league . The greatest success before the German reunification was the third place in the last league season in 1991, which entitled to participate in the Korać Cup .

Sporting success and financial defeat (1991-2004)

After the turnaround you entered the third-class regional league, in the Korać Cup you were eliminated in the first round. In 1997 the regional league championship followed and with it promotion to the 2nd basketball league . As early as 1999 , he was promoted to the top division, the basketball league . In the first season , SSV Hagebau Weißenfels achieved sixth place and thus the right to participate in the play-offs. There they were only eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Skyliners Frankfurt . Before the 2000/01 season , the team changed its name to Mitteldeutscher Basketball Clu b. With the name Weißenfels one had no chance of attracting new donors in Central Germany, the necessary money for top basketball was only no longer available in and around Weißenfels, said the then managing director Joachim Stumpf (as an entrepreneur in the hardware store also one of the most important donors) in 2000. He associated the new name with the expectation that fans from cities such as Leipzig , Halle or Merseburg would find themselves in this more easily than in the name Weissenfels. In Weißenfels there were also isolated rejection of the name change. At the same time, the team played their home game in the Centennial Hall (3000 seats) in Spergau . In 2002 the town hall in Weißenfels became the permanent home ground of the MBC. Until the end of April 2003, Ingo Wolf was sports manager at Weißenfels for four years.

During the 2003/04 season , the operating company of the Bundesliga team, WSF-Marketing GmbH, filed for insolvency. The management of the basketball league accused MBC of managing director Matthias Hund of “management errors” and “wrong decisions”. According to media reports from March 2004, the team was missing around 400,000 euros of the 1.7 million euros budget. The squad had been strengthened before the start of the season with well-known players such as Wendell Alexis , Stephen Arigbabu and Misan Nikagbatse . The Bundesliga withdrew the team's permission to start because of the bankruptcy. However, the MBC was able to legally enforce its starting right until the end of the season. In terms of sport, the league was managed and internationally, the MBC won a European cup competition, the FIBA EuroCup Challenge, in 2004 as one of the few German clubs (alongside Alba Berlin (1995), BG 74 Göttingen (2010) and Frankfurt Skyliners (2016)) . Due to the license withdrawal, the team was rated as relegated, and since the MBC also did not even receive a license for the second Bundesliga, the MBC was downgraded to the 1st Regionalliga Nord. In May 2004 the Mitteldeutsche Basketball Marketing GmbH (MBM) was founded and became the license holder of the Mitteldeutsche Basketball Club. Jörg Hexel became managing director.

Renewed athletic promotion (since 2004)

The club rose again a year later to the 2nd Bundesliga North, where it was runner-up twice in succession in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons. From the 2007/08 season , the so-called "wolves" played in the newly founded ProA . In April 2008, at the age of 23 , Martin Geissler took over the position of managing director of the operating company MBM. He also kept his position as team manager, which he took up in 2004. Before that, Geissler was press spokesman from 2002 to 2004. His predecessor Hexel in the office of managing director remained managing partner.

In the 2008/09 season , the ProA championship was celebrated one game day before the end of the season and the athletic promotion to the upper house of German basketball was achieved. There, the MBC was able to ensure relegation early in the 2009/10 season and was at times even within reach of a play-off place. The following season 2010/11 1 the MBC was only able to finish in 17th place in the table after a weak second half. The MBC thus descended again into the ProA.

The following season the MBC spent completely in the top group of the ProA and at the end of the main round moved into the play-offs as first in the table with 23 wins and five losses . There they made it to the finals and thus immediately returned to the basketball league . In the final, the MBC defeated the Kirchheim Knights and thus secured the championship of the 2nd basketball division ProA. The MBC finished the 2012/13 season with the 16th place in the table in the BBL and was able to secure relegation. The 2013/14 season ended with ninth place, the best position in 13 years. On matchday 28, they even moved up to eighth place, which entitles them to participate in the final round. Eighth place could not be kept. Nevertheless, the season was one of the most successful in club history. In the 2014/15 season , the MBC was on a play-off spot in the first quarter and ended the game year in twelfth place.

In September 2015, there was a change at the top of the operating company MBM: Jörg Hexel, who had previously been managing partner, switched to the post of spokesman for the advisory board. Elke Simon-Kuch took over the commercial tasks as the new managing partner, Martin Geissler remained responsible for the sporting and public relations, league and association issues as before. The “Wolves” ended the 2015/16 Bundesliga season with a record of nine wins and 25 defeats on the penultimate place in the table and were relegated to the ProA. In June 2016, in addition to his activities as managing director and team manager, Geissler became fourth partner of Mitteldeutsche Basketball Marketing GmbH (MBM) alongside Simon-Kuch, Hexel and Hans-Michael Schnur.

The MBC started the 2016/17 season under the motto “Mission Recovery”. The young Montenegrin coach Igor Jovović should manage the return to the Bundesliga . The Wolves went first in the table (27 wins and three defeats) in the championship round and were unbeaten in the quarter and semi-finals against Cologne and Kirchheim. Thus the MBC reached the final series, which already meant promotion to the Bundesliga. Here, too, the Jovović squad were harmed, won the first and second leg against Gotha (87:80, 84:62) and became champions. Jovović led the team to relegation in the first year after relegation, at the beginning of June 2018 he used a release clause in his contract to leave the MBC and accept an offer from the Polish first division club Stelmet Zielona Góra . The successor took over the previous assistant coach Aleksandar Šćepanović . At the end of January 2019, Šćepanović returned to the post of assistant coach, and Poropat returned as head coach and was entrusted with the task of leading the relegation-threatened team to stay in the Bundesliga. In May 2019, the MBC signed a contract with the US oil company Puraglobe, under which, for the time being, a change in the team name to Syntainics MBC (original spelling in capital letters SYNTAINICS MBC) was agreed until 2024. In the course of the name change, a new team crest was also presented. The group had already contributed financially to the Mitteldeutscher BC.

Poropat left the MBC after the end of the 2018/19 season, no agreement had been found with the MBC on further cooperation. In return, Wojciech Kamiński was signed by the Polish first division club Stal Ostrów Wielkopolski as a new coach. At the beginning of November 2019, the club announced that Kamiński would take a break of several weeks to recharge his batteries and that assistant coach Šćepanović would therefore temporarily take over the post of head coach again. Shortly afterwards, Managing Director Geissler stated that the break for Kamiński was “a clear decision” by the club's management, and that it was triggered by “mainly sporting reasons”. Whether the Pole would return to the position of coach was initially open. He did not, because on November 14, 2019, Björn Harmsen, an old friend, was signed as the new coach, Šćepanović remained as assistant coach. In mid-February 2020 Harmsen was fired after publicly criticizing players after the first home win of the season, accusing them of lack of commitment in defense and training. Harmsen demanded consequences from the team management, the club in turn accused the trainer of "provocation" and "medial solo effort". According to the association, an "unbridgeable hardening of the fronts" and a "breach of trust" occurred. Under Harmsen's leadership, the MBC had won two out of 13 games. The new coach became a household name: Silvano Poropat signed a contract until the end of the 2019/20 season. The collaboration was then extended.

The home games are played by the Central German Basketball Club in the Weißenfels town hall. The town hall has a capacity of 2300 seats and 700 standing places. At home games of the Central German BC, it is often referred to as "Wolfsbau" by fans.
