Sven Otto Hörstadius

Sven Otto Hörstadius (born February 18, 1898 in Stockholm , † June 16, 1996 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish experimental developmental biologist. He is known for research into the development of the sea ​​urchin embryo.

Life

Hörstadius' father was a judge and he dealt with biology (bird watching) as a teenager. He studied at Stockholm University , where he received his doctorate in 1928 under the embryologist John Runnström (1888–1971). From 1942 until his retirement in 1964 he was professor of zoology at Uppsala University .

He was known for his experimental skills in microsurgery and transplantation with thin glass needles on the sea urchin embryo. He demonstrated the formation of two gradients in the early embryonic stage and followed the formation of the neural crest in detail . He initially worked at the Kristineberg marine research station (egg maturation in the multi- bristle Pomatoceros triqueter ), but when he turned to work with sea urchins, he often worked at the marine research station in Naples. Later, while studying the development of the neural crest with Sven Sellman , he also used the Mexican axolotl as an experimental animal.

He was a foreign member of the Royal Society since 1952 and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1946 . He was also a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and an honorary doctorate at Cambridge, the Sorbonne and Bristol.

He worked with his wife Greta Kjellström (1903–1987). The marriage resulted in a son (doctor at the University Hospital in Uppsala) and a daughter.
