Erich Pietsch

Ernst Hermann Erich Pietsch (born May 6, 1902 in Berlin , † April 9, 1979 in Bad Homburg in front of the height ) was a German chemist and documentary . From 1955 to 1961 he was President of the German Society for Information Science and Information Practice .

Life

Pietsch spent his school days from 1914 to 1918 at the Bertram Realschule and then until 1921 at the Luisenstädtische Oberrealschule , both in Berlin. From 1921 he began to study chemistry at what is now the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he completed in 1926 with a doctorate. phil. finished. He continued his research work at the Berlin Institute for Physical Chemistry until 1934. In 1936 he took over the management of the editorial department of the Handbuch der Chemie founded by Leopold Gmelin , in which he had already worked from 1925 (from 1927 as deputy editor). Pietsch became a member of the NSDAP .

During the Second World War, Pietsch was temporarily active as a war administrator for the Reich Research Council in the Generalgouvernement and in occupied Ukraine and requisitioned book stocks.

After the war, he continued his work in the editorial department of the Handbuch der Chemie, which was moved to Clausthal-Zellerfeld under the name Gmelin Institute in 1946 and incorporated into the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science . In 1948 it was incorporated into the Max Planck Society and in 1957 the company moved to Frankfurt am Main . Pietsch had a great influence on the development of machine documentation in Germany.

In 1967 Pietsch retired.
