Svend Robinson (born March 4, 1952 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is a Canadian politician and former member of the Canadian House of Commons .

Robinson was born in Minneapolis , Minnesota , United States . His parents moved to Canada when he was a child. After completing his schooling at the University of British Columbia, Robinson received a degree in law and then studied at the London School of Economics . In 1972, Robinson married his high school girlfriend, but divorced her again when Robinson revealed his homosexual identity to her.

Robinson is a member of the social democratic New Democratic Party and was a member of the Canadian lower house from 1979 to 2004. He has been living his sexual identity openly since 1988. In the following years, the politicians Réal Ménard , Libby Davies , Bill Siksay , Scott Brison and Mario Silva as well as the Senators Laurier LaPierre and Nancy Ruth also came out in the Canadian parliament . In the House of Commons of Canada, Robinson represented the constituency of Burnaby , Vancouver .
